How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner
Robot vacuums will save you time and effort when it comes to regular cleaning. Top performers do a good job of removing dust and light debris and allow you to set no-go zones for pet areas or power cords.
The more expensive ones can even mop your floor however they're not able to climb up the stairs. Find models that feature intelligent mapping, real-time hazard avoidance, and roomy self-emptying bins.
Best Overall
The best robots we tried were user-friendly, efficient, and able keep up with the daily messes. You'll need a robot that has decent carpet-picking capability and the ability to handle stairs. If you're looking for a model with additional features, think about one that comes with smart mapping technology, or an app to control it remotely.
Camryn Rabideau, a contributing shopping writer at PEOPLE and a product reviewer who has tested several robotic vacuums, has been credited with testing hundreds of robot vacuums. She's a big fan of robovacs that offer the most convenience, such as self-emptying bins and charging docks that automatically empty and fill water tanks for mopping robots. She's also a fan of the robots that can recognize landmarks such as furniture legs and power cords to ensure they don't get caught when climbing the stairs.
This Black and Decker robot has a lower score on navigation and has less technology for avoiding objects than the best-rated models. It does however have an enormous dust bin that doesn't need frequent emptying and a long battery life. It also comes with an option that allows you to schedule cleaning times and then return to the place it was last. This makes it easier to clean larger homes. This model is also a great choice for pet owners because it can spot and eliminate hair tangled and fallen food particles.
In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined with a LIDAR (light) sensor which can identify obstacles and map rooms with a structured-light sensor to identify objects as well as detect edges. The combination lets it avoid stairs, droplets of liquid and furniture legs with ease and save up to four floor maps for future reference. It is also able to stop the cleaning process at any time and pick up where it left off so that you can complete chores while the robot does its work. Continued offers a 3D view of your home, complete with room labels and advanced cleaning options.
Although this model isn't able to clean as well as our top-rated models, it excels in removing small particles like sand and baking soda as well as larger items like orzo pasta and metal screws. The only downsides are that it cannot mop, and its navigation system is less impressive.
Best for Carpet
If you have carpeting, choose a robot vacuum with a high rating for carpet and rug ability to maneuver and pick up. A lot of models do a great job of picking up dust embedded in low-pile carpet and a few do a decent job at sweeping up heavier debris like orzo pasta, metal screws, and pet hair. But they don't pick up small particles like canister or upright vacuums and can miss ground-in dirt close to thresholds and baseboards.
The best choice for most carpeted homes is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop, which allows you to swap out a cleaning bin and mopping pad that is damp. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop that can clean and mop at the same time with circular pads spinning at 200 rpm. It detects and raises the pads when it encounters carpet to prevent wetting the floor. You don't have to take them off or replace them after every use. The Q Revo also performs better than other robot vacuums/mops when it comes to keeping away from obstacles and getting closer to carpets and thresholds.
Another solid option is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which did exceptionally well in our tests and can be scheduled via the app to clean your home when you're away from home. It can also be set to mop only, and we liked its remarkable navigation on bare floors and rugs, as well as its ability to get over and up onto furniture. The Combo i5 has a long time to run and excellent path planning for a device of this size.
If you're looking for a more high-tech model, consider the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It comes with a large dock that can last for weeks and not need to be empty. It also features impressive navigation and auto-emptying capabilities on carpets and floors that are not cleaned. It also comes with a smart mapping system and can be set to only run during certain hours (a useful feature to stop mischievous children and dextrous animals from running wild). The Shark is less powerful than other mop/robot combination models however, it still manages to pick up pet hair and hair very well. It's also the most affordable price of our top picks.
best vacuums for hardwood floors
Robot vacuums are a great pick for hardwood floors because they are able to maneuver around obstacles and not damage surfaces that are not bare. They do an excellent job of picking up crumbs and dust, but they struggle with pet hair and other large debris. They don't have the suction power of a top-of-the-line upright or canister vacuum, so they're not the best choice for carpeted rooms or deep cleaning upholstery.
The most effective robots are those that are two-in-one, which combine the power of a mop with a vacuum to complete the task in one move. If you have flooring that is mixed choose models with an onboard sensor which detects changes in the floor's texture and adjusts suction to match. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+, for instance, has this feature and can transition effortlessly from hard to soft carpeting.
If your home is mostly composed of hardwood floors, think about an automated vacuum and mop combo like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model is an efficient robot vacuum with intelligent navigation to clean hardwood floors and other hard surfaces. Additionally, it can mop too. Its sensors assist it in avoiding stairs and other hazards so you don't have to worry about the robot falling down the stairs and breaking your hardwood.
The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to clean hardwood floors by applying downward pressure, instead of simply swab them to get rid of dirt and dust. Its pads that can be reused reduce waste and help to spread less germs. They can also be cleaned in the docking stations to save time. The mops can also be dried, washed and used again.
Both the robovac and the mop are both controlled by your smartphone to make it easier to manage the device. For instance you can use the app to create a no-go zone that the vacuum won't enter or label rooms separately, or schedule cleaning times for certain areas. The Eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that collects debris through a trapdoor and puts it in a bagless or disposable bin, meaning you don't need to empty the bin manually every time as you would with other models.
Ideal for small Spaces
These robots are specifically designed to work in small spaces. They have smaller bins, which can hold less debris. They are also more efficient when it comes to getting around corners better than larger models. They can also fit under furniture that larger robots can't reach. These robots are also cheaper than more expensive models, but you'll have to empty their dirt bins manually at the end of each cleaning session.
A few years ago robotic vacuums experienced a major change. Manufacturers started adding sensors that could help them navigate around and avoid household items that conventional sensors might become stuck on or run across. The improvements in technology reduced the number of times our testers had to clean up after a robotic incident.
The new sensors aren't completely eliminating all the issues that these devices have however. The cheapest models are still struggling with the same challenges that the older ones did and most need a certain amount of illumination to be able see where they're headed. If you live in a dark house or have lots of furniture that is low-profile, think about purchasing top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space like our best overall and runner-up choices do. This allows them to stay clear of stairs and other obstacles while working in the dark.
In addition being capable of working in the dark and in the dark, these models can be set to use their cliff sensors only when they're near or on the floor, not above them. It's important to cover mirrors in order to stop this from occurring. The lasers used by the LIDAR-based models may bounce off reflective surfaces, which makes the robot believe it's in a different room.
Some of the models we recommend allow you to create virtual no-go areas for areas you don't wish the robot to visit. This is a great option if you have small children or pets. These features aren't present on all models we test. Read our full reviews before deciding.
