The democratic system in South Korea is prone to populist tendencies. It's still more stable than expected.

The country is looking for a new paradigm of development. A Confucian culture that values respect for ancestors and gendered family relationships continues to influence the society. There are indications of a secularist culture trend that is emerging.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of modern Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild foods. About 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. They also raised livestock and made furs. These people formed tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also created an industry for metalworking, which produced bronze tools, and later iron ones. They traded with other nations and introduced block and celadon printing to Japan, as well as art styles as well as a written language and paper making.


In 2333 BCE Gojoseon was founded on the southern part of the peninsula. The state adopted Chinese culture that included Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. In the name of filiopiety fathers were responsible for their families, and had to be obeyed and respected by everyone, even their grandchildren and children.

Goryeo, a country that was ruled from 918 to 1392 CE, gave the world the Hangul Alphabet based upon the patterns created by the mouth while pronouncing. This greatly improved communication and led to a boom in the writing of Buddhist text. Woodblock printing and the movable metal type were also improved. In 1145 CE, the Samguk Sagi or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was the first to be recorded.

Evolution in Korea

The Korean peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times. Early evidence for human settlements is evident in the form stone-lined cist graves with precious items like amazonite jewellery being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures known as dolmens, built from huge single stones, are widespread throughout the country.

In the first second half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognisable political state. The peninsula was later under the control of a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE), including Baekje and Goguryeo. The northern portion of the peninsula was occupied for a period by the Balhae Kingdom, which historians do not believe to be a real Korean state.

After the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, or Several States Period. In all of them, Baekje was the most powerful state, but its dynasty ended by the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE and left the southern provinces of Manchuria and the western region surrounding the Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to collaborate to expand their territorial holdings. Silla with the aid of the Chinese eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.

As Korea enters the post-crisis era its development model appears to be in flux. Those who are appalled by the immense cost of the old system would prefer an extensive program of liberalization of capital as well as labor markets. On the other hand, people who support the old system try to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments, and by inflating fears about potential job loss.

Policy and academic analysts are in a tense debate about the extent to these two trends are driving Koreas development towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article examines developments to date, by looking at five phases of Korea's political development including illiberal democracy (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and participatory democracy (2002 to the present). This article also highlights important factors that appear to be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have made significant progress in promoting their views to this segment. A survey from 2009 showed that nearly one-third of respondents didn't believe in evolution. Of the respondents, 41% stated that there wasn't enough evidence from science to support the theory; 39% said the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs and 17% said it was difficult to comprehend. The level of doubt is comparable to that of the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced species of life.

In the past, the majority of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on educating college students and bringing them to Christ. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event drew an impressive crowd of professors, scientists, and church leaders.

The success of the event led to the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31st of 1980. The inauguration event was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and attracted a lot of attention.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, where it reported on its activities and published articles about the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated a number of films and slides from ICR, as well as several books on creationism that were published outside of Korea. KACR members also gave talks at universities and churches throughout the country.

One instance of an KACR success story took place at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, there were enough students interested in the idea of creationism that they raised enough money and support to put up an on-campus museum with creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

Evolution in South Korea

In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok was replaced by miniskirts and other fashion elements from abroad. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. At this time the samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, were loved by the public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums and other instruments of music.

Korea's new development model is being created in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The main challenge for the new regime is to find the right balance between market-oriented and state-led policies. It also requires a change in the incentives, monitoring, and disciplining strategies that have been a part of the system prior to the crisis. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4.

Established by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established jointly by people living along the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other regions, as well as immigrants from northern China. In the 4th century, in the early part of, Baekje was a major regional power, and expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. As a result, it was in frequent battle with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders along the border.

The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries resulted in the rise of powerful local factions. Gungye was a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. He also exerted control over part of the present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He became a rival to Goguryeo.

However the rule of his was short-lived. After Gungye's defeat, he was overthrown by a powerful local leader Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935, Later Baekje was peacefully incorporated into Goryeo as an alternative state. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized government system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. From then on the Korean peninsula was controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly grew into powerful states on the peninsula as well as in Manchuria.
