Is Robot Vacuum Cleaner Best The Most Effective Thing That Ever Was?
How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums can save you time and effort when it comes to regular cleaning. Top performers do a good job picking up dust and lightweight debris and many allow you to create no-go zones for pet areas or power cords.

The ones that are more expensive can even mop your floor, but they can't climb up the stairs. Choose models that have intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and roomy self-emptying bins.

Read the Full Document 've tested that we have tested are effective, easy to use, and able to keep up with the everyday messes. It is also important to choose a model that can handle stairs and has good ability to pick up carpets. If you're looking for additional features, you might be interested in a robot that uses smart mapping technology, or an app that lets you control the robot remotely.

Camryn Rabideau, a contributing shopping writer at PEOPLE and a reviewer of products who has tested dozens robotic vacuums, is credited with testing dozens of robot vacuums. She's a huge fan of robotic vacuums that offer the greatest convenience, including self-emptying dustbins and charging docks that automatically empty and fill the water tanks used by mopping robots. She also loves robots that can recognize landmarks such as furniture legs and power cables so that they don't fall when climbing stairs.

When compared with the top-rated models this Black and Decker robot vacuum has less object-avoidance technology and its score for navigation is lower. It does however have a large dustbin that doesn't require frequent emptying, and has a long battery life. It also has the ability to schedule cleaning sessions and return to where it was last. This makes it easier for you to take care of larger homes. This model is also a good option for pet owners as it can spot and avoid tangled hair and fallen food particles.

In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined with a LIDAR (light) sensor which can identify obstacles and map rooms by using a structured-light sensor to identify objects as well as detect edges. The combination allows it to stay clear of stairs, drops of liquid, and furniture legs easily and save up to four floor maps for future references. It can also stop the cleaning process at any time and resume where it left off and let you do chores while the robot is working. The included app offers a 3D representation of your home, room labels, and advanced cleaning options.

While this robot can't clean as well as our top-rated models, it is superior in removing fine debris like sand and baking soda and heavier objects, like orzo pasta and screws made of metal. The only drawback is that it isn't able to mop and has a less efficient navigation system.

The best for Carpet

If you have carpeting, select a robot vacuum that has a high score for rug and carpet ability to maneuver and pick up. Many models do a decent job of removing dust embedded in low-pile carpet, and several do a decent job at picking up heavier debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair. They can't take in fine particles like an upright or canister, and they may be unable to pick up dirt close to baseboards or thresholds.

The best option for carpeted homes is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop, which allows you to swap between a cleaning bin and mopping pad with damp. The Roborock Q Revo, for example, is a vacuum cleaner and mops wet with circular pads that spin at 200 rotations per minute. It recognizes and raises its pads when it comes into contact with carpet, preventing the floor from getting wet. You don't have to remove them or replace them each time. The Q Revo is also more efficient than other robot vacuums/mops when it comes to keeping away from obstacles and getting close to rugs and thresholds.

Another solid option is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which did exceptionally well in our tests and can be scheduled via the app to clean your home when you're away from home. It can also be set to mop only and we loved its remarkable navigation on rug and floor surfaces and its ability to get over and up onto furniture. The Combo i5 has a long runtime and excellent path-planning for the size of the device.

If you want a more advanced model, look into the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It has a large dock that can last for weeks and not need to be emptied. It also has impressive ability to navigate and auto-empty on carpets and floors that are not cleaned. It also has a smart mapping system, and can be programmed to run only during specific hours (a beneficial feature to keep mischievous children and dextrous animals from running amok). The Shark is less powerful than other mop/robot combinations, but it does pick up pet hair and hair very well. It's also the highest price of our top picks.

Ideal for Hard Floors

Robot vacuums are the ideal choice for hardwood floors as they can easily maneuver around obstacles without damaging bare surfaces. They are great at picking up dust and crumbs but struggle with pet hair or larger debris. They don't have the suction of an upright or a top-quality canister vacuum, making them a poor choice for deep cleaning carpeted or upholstery areas.

The best two-in-one robots combine a vacuum and a mop and take care of an entire task in one sweep. Look for a model that has an onboard sensor that can detect any changes in the flooring and adjust suction in line with the changes. This feature is available on the ECOVACS Deebot T9+ and lets it effortlessly transition from hard carpeting to soft carpeting.

If you have a lot of hardwood flooring in your home you may want to consider a robot mop and vacuum combination like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model is an impressive robotic vacuum that has smart navigation that can clean hardwood and other surfaces. It also mop. The sensors help it avoid the stairs and other hazards, so you don't have to be worried about the robot falling down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.

The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, not simply swab them to remove dust and dirt. The mop pads that are reusable reduce the amount of waste, and make it less likely to spread germs, and can be cleaned in the docking station, saving your time. The mops can also be cleaned and dried to stop the spread of mold.

The robovac is controlled by your smartphone, making it easier to use. For instance you can make use of the app to designate a no-go zone that the vacuum cannot enter, label separate rooms, or schedule cleaning sessions for certain areas. The Eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock, which collects debris through a trapdoor, and puts it in a bagless or disposable bin, which means you don't need to empty the bin manually every time as you would with other models.

Best for Small Spaces

As the name implies that these robots are designed for smaller areas. They have smaller bins that contain less debris, and they're more efficient than the larger models in navigating tight corners. They can also fit underneath furniture that larger robots have difficulty reaching. They are generally less expensive than the pricier picks, as well, but you'll have to manually empty their dirt compartments at the end of each cleaning session.

A few years ago, robot vacuums went through a major change when manufacturers started adding sensors to help them navigate and avoid household objects that their conventional sensors would become stuck on or over. This improved the number of times our testers had to clean up after a robotic snag.

The new sensors aren't completely eliminating all issues that these devices have however. The cheapest models are still struggling with the same challenges that the older models faced and, in addition, they require a certain amount of light to see where they're going. If you reside in a dark area or have a lot of furniture that is low-profile, think about buying a model that utilizes top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space, like our best overall and runner-up picks do. This allows them to work in the dark and avoid obstacles like stairs.

In addition being able to work in the dark, these models can be programmed to use their cliff sensors only on or near the floor, not when they're above them. It is still recommended to shield any mirrors that could interfere with this function though, as the laser used by a LIDAR-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces, causing the robot to think it is in another room.

Some of the models that we recommend let you create virtual no-go areas for areas that you don't want the robot to go to. This is helpful for those with pets or small children. These features aren't present on all models we test. Read our full reviews before deciding.
