BiOCl/BiOBr/rGO ternary heterojunctions were synthesized and characterized, and their photocatalytic activities were examined. Three different rGO mass ratios were incorporated into BiOCl75%BiOBr25%; 1% rGO, 3% rGO, and 5% rGO, respectively. The successful incorporation of rGO into the composites was confirmed using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Furthermore, calculated band gap, elemental composition, and composites' morphology were investigated using UV-visible (UV-Vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The photocatalytic activities of the ternary heterojunctions were evaluated toward the photocatalytic reduction of 4-nitroaniline (4-NA) in aqueous solution. Experimental results reveal that rGO incorporation enhances the activity of the prepared heterojunction photocatalysts, where photocatalyst containing 5% rGO exhibited the highest activity achieving rate of 0.84 min-1.Peripheral inflammation has been implicated in cognitive dysfunction and dementia. While studies outline the relationship between elevated inflammation and individual gray or white matter alterations, less work has examined inflammation as related to connectivity between gray and white matter or variability in these associations by race. We examined the relationship between peripheral inflammation and tract-based structural connectomics in 74 non-demented participants (age = 69.19 ± 6.80 years; 53% female; 45% Black) who underwent fasting venipuncture and MRI. Serum was assayed for C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β. Graph theory analysis integrated T1-derived gray matter volumes and DTI-derived white matter tractography into connectivity matrices analyzed for local measures of nodal strength and efficiency in a priori regions of interest associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors and dementia. Linear regressions adjusting for relevant covariates showed associations between inflammatory markers and nodal strength in the isthmus, posterior and caudal anterior cingulate (p's ≤ .042). Adding an inflammatory marker*race term showed race-modified associations between C-reactive protein and efficiency in the thalamus and amygdala, and nodal strength in the putamen (p's ≤ .048), between interleukin-6 and efficiency in the pars triangularis and amygdala (p's ≤ .024), and between interleukin-1β and nodal strength in the pars opercularis (p = .048). Higher levels of inflammation associated with lower efficiency and higher strength for White participants but higher efficiency and lower strength for Black participants. Results suggest inflammation is associated with tract-based structural connectomics in an older diverse cohort and that differential relationships may exist by race within prefrontal and limbic brain regions.Communication with family members about the COVID-19 vaccine may play an important role in vaccination decisions, especially among young people. This study examined the association between family communication about the COVID-19 vaccine and vaccination intention. Participants were Black/African Americans aged 18-30 years (N = 312) recruited through an online survey in June 2020. We assessed family communication, vaccine attitudes, perceived norms, outcome expectancies, and vaccination intention. More than half (62%) of the participants had talked to family members about the vaccine. Females were more likely than males to have engaged in family communication (63% vs. 59%) (p. > .05). Family communication, injunctive norms, and descriptive norms were significantly (p. less then .01) associated with vaccination intention. Family communication was the strongest predictor of intention.Promoting discussions about vaccinations between young Black adults and their families may increase the likelihood of adopting positive vaccination beliefs and influencing vaccine decision-making.Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is an essential cytokine for blastocyst implantation. This study evaluated the effect of LIF inhibition on the blockage of embryo implantation. A truncated mouse LIF (tmLIF) was designed and expressed in E. coli. The protein expression was optimized using different culture media and inducers. To block pregnancy, the mice were immunized by the purified protein via maternal injection of the protein or in utero injection of the anti-LIF serum. The expression of implantation-relevant genes was quantified in the uterine tissue. The results showed that the protein was expressed in aggregated form in E. coli. The highest yield of protein was produced in the M9 medium. The insoluble protein was completely dissociated by SDS and 2-ME combination, but not by urea. The maternal immunization reduced the number of offspring, but not significantly. Instead, in utero injection of the anti-LIF serum prevented the blastocyst implantation. Gene expression analyses showed decrease of Jam2, Msx1and HB-EGF genes and increase of Muc1 gene as the result of intrauterine administration of the anti-LIF serums. In conclusion, SDS-mediated solubilization of inclusion bodies was compatible with in vivo studies. The intrauterine administration of anti-LIF serum could prevent mouse pregnancy. This indicates that in utero application of LIF antibodies might be used as a contraceptive.
Despite one third of children with acquired brain injury (ABI) experiencing new functional impairments following critical care admission, there is limited research investigating the impact of new functional impairments on overall health-related quality of life (HRQOL) or among important HRQOL domains. We aimed to investigate the association between new functional impairments, measured by the Functional Status Scale (FSS), and HRQOL in pediatric patients with ABI after critical care.
We conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective observational study of 275 children aged 2months to 18years with ABI. The primary exposure evaluated was change in FSS from baseline at hospital discharge, categorized per prior work (no change, 1-2 point increase, and ≥ 3 point increase). The primary outcome was overall HRQOL 6months after hospital discharge, measured by the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) total score.
