The Best Drip Coffee Machines
Drip coffee makers are workhorses capable of hands-off brewing. But they can also be big and heavy, taking up valuable counter space or even a spot under the cabinet.
The top drip machines are streamlined and simple to use. Some drip machines have extra features such as programmable clocks and self-cleaning modes to make your morning coffee more personalised.
1. De'Longhi TrueBrew
The De'Longhi TrueBrew is a one-stop shop for coffee. It can be made from whole beans to a full carafe using just a few presses. It comes with a built-in burr grinder (taken directly from De'Longhi's espresso machines) that measures the proper amount of coffee grounds and compacts them before making the coffee - eliminating pods and filters made of plastic.
It also offers a range of settings to fit the size and style, from 3oz espresso drinks to 16oz of iced coffee and 40oz for the standard carafe. It pours the coffee into a variety of vessel, from big mugs to those tiny espresso cups, or even tall travel mugs that do not typically fit under drip machines. It can even make tea!
Bean Extract Technology is a word that manufacturers love to use. It "adapts and grinds" beans based on your preferences. That's it for marketing. It's important to note that it's a breeze to use, pretty quick and doesn't cause a lot of a mess while brewing. It does not have the capability to brew either a long or short shot of espresso and lacks steam wands for milk. If you're looking for those features, I would suggest checking out the Moccamaster KBGV Select instead.
2. Cuisinart MultiServe
This is one of the best drip coffee machines available on the market. It produces consistently flavorful hot cups of coffee that brew efficiently.
We also liked the simplicity of customizing the brewing process. You can choose your cup size (from 5-ounce single serving to a full carafe) and your desired strength by turning dials and also choose between either a french press or regular setting. You can even make cold brew at the push of an ice cube, or choose from a range of specialty options such as Over Ice and Roasted.
The only issue is that it's not as sophisticated as the more sophisticated models that we tested. For instance, the rounded Smeg drip machine resembles a sparkling Easter egg and is a welcome departure from boxy competitors. Its narrow opening and slim tank can be tricky to navigate, particularly in the dark when the brew is in. It requires a bit more thought and effort than most consumers might want to make part of their morning routine.
3. Keurig K-Cup brewer
Keurig single serve coffee makers utilize K cups that are pre-packaged that eliminate the necessity of measuring or grinding grounds. They also let you control brewing time. They can also brew one cup of coffee in less than two minutes, which is considerably faster than a traditional drip machine.
However, the Keurigs we've tested have created lots of mess, and are much more than drip machines. The spout that spews hot coffee creates a two-inch splash zone that releases droplets on the drip tray, machine and counter. And they produce an irritating, loud sound when you're making coffee.
The Keurigs that we tested worked well, despite the mess. The K-Cafe with Smart Keurig is the most sophisticated model, and comes with an easily detachable reservoir, four K-cup sizes and three temperature settings and a user-friendly menu. It also has a milk frother which can froth whole, skim or non-dairy milk. It's an excellent choice for those who want to make a different cup of coffee each day or for families with large families that require an extra capacity.
The Keurig Instant Pod is a good choice for anyone who is looking for a simple and easy-to-use single-serve device. It comes with a huge 78-ounce water tank that can make several cups before it needs to be refilled. It also allows brewing using your own coffee grounds, a feature that is not often found in the world of Keurig. The controls are simple and straightforward however, the machine communicates using tones and chirps, not an LCD, making it difficult to know the moment when a coffee is ready.
4. Cuisinart Drip Machine
This durable, mid-priced machine has all the features that you require to start your day. It comes with a large, 14-cup reservoir and an easily-readable water level indicator window. It is easy to use thanks to the large buttons and clearly labeled labels. The removable filter and grinder can both be cleaned in the sink. This means that you don't have to scrub out the grounds from hard-to reach places. It also comes with a handy brew-strength selector that lets you choose between three different settings including bold.
drip brew is equipped with a charcoal filter that removes metals and unpleasant flavors as well as odors from the tap water. This can make your coffee to taste dull or burnt. This means less work, and a better tasting cup of coffee.
Another benefit: The programming feature makes it easy to set your coffee to brew at a certain time. The pause button lets you to pour one or two cups of coffee before the whole pot is making it, which can be beneficial for hectic mornings when you need a boost of caffeine. It also has a sleek and modern design and looks more at ease on the counter of your kitchen compared to most boxy drip coffee machines.
5. Ratio Six
Like its older sibling the Ratio Eight, the Six provides a premium experience at a slightly more affordable price and smaller footprint. The single-button controls mimic the pour-over process, and comes with a precision measured flow of water, and the ideal temperature for coffee. The machine utilizes a powerful 1400 watts to heat water and complete the entire brewing process in about five to six minutes. This is significantly less than many of the less expensive models we have tested. This rapid brew time is in part due to the bloom process, which allows coffee grounds to settle before the shower head delivers the remainder of the hot water to ensure the best extraction.
The Six also has a unique heat shield to safeguard the spray head during brewing and also to keep the water at an optimum temperature. This is one of the few brewers that have been Golden Cup certified by the Specialty Coffee Association, which means that it maintains the right temperature for brewing throughout the brew cycle.
In terms of design in terms of style, the Six is sleek and minimal It comes with a stainless-steel carafe that is placed on top of a filter holder that can accommodate Melitta flat bottom filters. The carafe that is insulated keeps the coffee hot, without the use of a heated plate. This helps preserve the flavor.
6. Gevi 10-Cup Coffee Maker
The Gevi is a compact elegant coffee maker that doesn't take up much counter space. It makes a fantastic tasting cup of coffee. The touchscreen has cute icons that let you select one-touch commands. For example, you can choose Bold or, if you are only making half a pot of coffee, you can select the One to four cups feature. The machine also lets you set the timer and switch the brew cycle-finished tone that sounds audible on or off.
It's nice to have a built-in grinder that allows you to adjust the size and the strength of your coffee. It takes a while to understand how the machine works, but it's intuitive once you've mastered it. It comes with many of the features you would expect to find in more expensive models.
The only downside is that it can't brew the entire carafe in one go this could be a challenge if you need to serve multiple people. But it's a solid option if you're in the market for drip coffee maker with a built-in grinder and the ability to make various kinds of drinks. It comes with a one-year warranty and a great customer service.
7. Moccamaster KBGV
The Moccamaster is a premium drip-coffee maker built to last. It comes with a 5-year warranty and is manufactured in the Netherlands by Technivorm. The elegant glass carafe can be set on the top of a warmer that keeps the coffee at an ideal temperature for up to six minutes. It can be programmed to work with a full pot or a half pot and is certified to brew coffee at the recommended temperatures and times by the Specialty Coffee Association. It also has a "practically invisible drip stopper," an incredibly small lever that is located beneath the brew kettle that will stop the flow of coffee when you remove the carafe while making coffee.
This machine is more expensive than other models on the market, but it's worth the cost for anyone looking to have consistently great coffee without having to spend a lot in the kitchen. All components that come into contact with water or ground are easily accessible. Although the brewing process is longer than some other models, it's still quicker than pour-over brewing. Additionally, the Moccamaster's unique design that is reminiscent of workshop tools or scientific devices and adds the perfect touch of elegance to your kitchen.
