The Evolution Site
The theory of natural selection as the basis of evolution is the unifying force in the field of modern biology. It connects disciplines as diverse as genetics, microbiology, and Palaeontology.
However the study of evolutionary theory is often controversial, and the resultant misinformation can confuse people about its basic concepts. This site clarifies essential concepts.
What is Evolution?
Modern evolutionary theory focuses on the gradual and cumulative changes that occur in populations over time. These changes are caused by natural selection, which increases the number of organisms who have traits that are beneficial and allow them to survive and reproduce in a particular environment. In turn, these organisms leave more offspring than those who do not have the beneficial characteristics. This results in an alteration in genetics that could eventually lead to the development of new species.
The term "evolution", is often associated with "survival-of-the most fittest" which implies that people who are better adaptable to specific environmental conditions will have an advantage over those who are less well-adapted. This is just one of many ways that evolution could occur.
Another way to use the word evolution is to suggest that a species are able to move from one stage to the next. This theory of evolution is called anagenetic or cladogenesis. This theory is not supported by the scientific definition of evolution. Instead the theory of evolution that is scientifically based focuses on changes that take place within populations over time and these changes are caused by genetic mutations and natural selection.
Charles Darwin was one of the scientists who supported this view. Others, notably Alfred Russel Wallace, who created the macroevolution theory believed that this was the only way that the higher forms of life could be derived from lower ones.
In order for a concept to be considered a theory, it must be able to stand up to rigorous testing and evidence. The evidence of evolution has stood the test of time and has been supported by numerous studies in various sciences, from biology to geology, chemistry to astronomy. Evolution is the foundation of science and is believed by a majority of scientists around the world. Many people are misinformed about the nature of evolution theory and how it connects to religion.
What is the Theory of Evolution (Evolutionary Theory)?
Evolution is the scientific explanation for how living things change over time. It relies on a number of well-established observable facts that show that more offspring are often produced than could possibly survive and that individuals differ from one another in their physical characteristics (phenotype) and that distinct traits confer varying rates of reproduction and survival and can be passed down to future generations. These observations are supported by a growing amount of evidence derived from molecular biology, palaeontology and climatology functional morphology geology.
Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace independently conceived the theory of evolution based on selection in the mid-19th century as a way to explain how organisms are adapted their biological and physical environments. It is today the most supported and most widely tested theory in the field of science. Its predictions were proved by the fact that, for instance, more complex organisms have less genetic mutations. In addition the more successful an organism is at being able to reproduce and survive in its ability to reproduce, the more likely it will be to pass on its genes to future generations.
Some people are against evolution based on the belief that it implies that there is no meaning to life. However, many scientists who are also religious believers, such as the prominent Cambridge Palaeontologist Simon Conway Morris, believe that evolution is not only compatible with faith in God but is enhanced by it (BioLogos 2014).
Many highly skilled evolutionary biologists have been involved in developing and testing the theory of evolution, including some respected evangelical Christian leaders. Many of these researchers have contributed to the understanding of a broad variety of phenomena including phylogenetics and genomics, and the formation and role of fossils.
The term "theory", which is often misused is a reference to a scientific hypotheses that have been tested and refined over a period of time. Scientists test hypotheses by repeating the experiments or observations that led them to them. Therefore, the theory of evolution has been repeatedly borne out and so have the theories of Copernican, germ and atomic theory.
What is the Process of Evolution?
The process of evolution is a gradual shift in the genetically different individuals within a species over time. This is the result of natural selection of individuals that are more adapted to their environment. The individuals who are more adapted have higher chances of reproduction and survival. As more of these individuals survive and reproduce their genes are more prevalent in the general population. This process is sometimes described as "survival of the fittest."
According to the theory of evolution the mutations that result in genomic variation are the primary material of evolutionary change. These mutations may occur at random or be influenced by the environment. When mutations are random, the resulting allele frequencies may vary from generation to generation. In contrast, when the mutation is beneficial, it can increase the frequency of the allele, which causes it to spread throughout the population.
Changes in the frequency of alleles can result in new species over time. The new species will then develop and evolve into new forms. This is a process known as macroevolution. The creation of a new species is usually caused by changes in the environment that provide certain types of resources available or cause new environmental problems. For instance, the development of finches in the Galapagos Islands is a result of the abundance of food sources and the need to defend themselves from predators.
In a wider sense the term "evolution" can be described as any change in the characteristics of living organisms over time. The change could be minor, such as the development of a new coloration, or massive, for instance, the creation of a new organ.
Scientists who believe in the theory of evolution generally agree that genetic change is important in the process of generating evolution. They also believe that evolution is a process that happens over time, usually over a period of millions of years. They differ on the importance of different factors that could speed up or slow down the process. For example the role played by sexual selection, environmental pressures and mutation bias. Despite these differences, the majority of scientists are still convinced that evolution is real and the evidence to prove it is overwhelming.
What evidence can be found for evolution?
Since Darwin's time, scientists have gathered evidence to support his theory of evolution. This evidence comes from fossils which show the evolution of organisms over time. 에볼루션 between living organisms as well as embryology, biogeography and genetics are evidence.
The evolutionary tree is the most effective way to prove evolution. It shows how different species are related. Another source of evidence is homologous structures, which share a similar structure in different species, but serve different purposes like the wings of bats and birds. The fact that different species evolve and adapt to the same environment is another sign of evolution. For instance, arctic-foxes and Ptarmigans wear white pelts during the winter months that blend in with the snow and ice. This is a kind of convergent evolutionary mechanism, which suggests the species shared common ancestors.
Another source of evidence is the existence of vestige structures, which are unusable parts of an organism which could have served a function in the distant ancestor. For example the human appendix may be an oblique reminder of an organ used to digest food. Natural selection causes the structures to shrink when they cease to be used.
Scientists have also collected evidence for evolution by observing and experimenting. The evidence for evolution can be grouped into six distinct categories: changes that can be observed at small scales, biogeographic distributions and comparative anatomies fossil records, genetics. Each of these categories offers solid evidence for the evolution of life.
Many people have misconceptions about the theory of evolution. But, it's an actual fact. It isn't only a theory, it is a mighty collection of decades of observation and accumulated data that has been tested and proven. Whatever people believe or disbelieve about the theory of evolution scientists continue to study and discover new information to better know the story of life on Earth. This information will help scientists understand how to prevent future global catastrophes and also how to make the most of the resources of our planet. This will allow us to better meet the needs of people living on the planet.
