Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common manifestation among patients critically ill with SARS-CoV-2 infection (Coronavirus 2019) and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The pathophysiology of renal failure in this context is not fully understood, but likely to be multifactorial. The intensive care unit outcomes of patients following COVID-19 acute critical illness with associated AKI have not been fully explored. We conducted a cohort study to investigate the risk factors for acute kidney injury in patients admitted to and intensive care unit with COVID-19, its incidence and associated outcomes.
We reviewed the medical records of all patients admitted to our adult intensive care unit suffering from SARS-CoV-2 infection from 14th March 2020 until 12th May 2020. Acute kidney injury was defined using the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO) criteria. The outcome analysis was assessed up to date as 3rd of September 2020.
A total of 81 patients admitted during this period. All paof stay. Recovery of renal function was complete in all survived patients.
Acute kidney injury and renal replacement therapy is common in critically ill patients presenting with COVID-19. It is associated with increased severity of illness on admission to ICU, increased mortality and prolonged ICU and hospital length of stay. A deficiency of 5-HT can modulate dopamine neurotransmission in the striatum to elicit hyperactivity and psychosis in AN patients. Also, the release and availability of 5-HT are modulated by serotonin-1A (5-HT1A) auto-receptor. The present study investigates the role of striatal metabolism of 5-HT and dopamine in precipitating hyperactivity in the rat model of diet restriction (DR) induced AN. The role of tryptophan (Trp) in influencing the 5-HT metabolism and the mRNA expression of 5-HT1A auto-receptor is also investigated. NXY-059 ic50 We find that long-term DR for 38 days reduces body-weight in rats and produces hyperactivity, similar to AN. This hyperactivity is characterized by declined striatal metabolism of both, dopamine and 5-HT. The mRNA expression of 5-HT1A auto-receptor in the raphe nuclei is also decreased. Trp co-treatment improves these deficiencies in monoamine metabolism and alleviates hyperactivity. Interestingly, DR-induced changes in body-weights are not effected by Trp co-treatment. The study suggests that the striatal metabolism of 5-HT and dopamine and mRNA expression of 5-HT1A auto-receptor has an important role in the pathogenesis of AN. The study explored whether HYP could mitigate DM-induced cognitive dysfunction and further elucidate on potential molecular mechanism in rats.
Streptozotocin/high-fat diet-induced diabetic rats were treated orally with HYP (50, 200 and 400 mg/kg/day) for six consecutive weeks. The blood glucose and serum insulin levels, Morris water maze test, intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test, and brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were determined. The brain expression of inflammatory nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), lipid profile and caspase-3 activity were estimated.
