Hydrocarbazole derivatives bearing a quaternary stereogenic center at C4a were synthesized by means of intramolecular oxidative dearomatization of diarylamines using hypervalent iodine in moderate to good yields. The hydrocarbazole bearing a cyclohexadienone moiety was further converted into the tetracyclic skeletons of Aspidosperma and akuammiline-type alkaloids via regioselective aza-Michael reaction at C4 and at C9a, respectively.Peptide-functionalized surfaces, composed of optimized l-peptides, show a high resistance toward nonspecific adsorption of proteins. As l-peptides are known to be prone to proteolytic degradation, the aim of this work is to enhance the stability against enzymatic degradation by using the all d-peptide mirror image of the optimized l-peptides and to determine if the all d-enantiomer retains the protein-resistant and antifouling properties. Two l-peptides and their d-peptide mirror images, some of them containing the nonproteinogenic amino acid α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib), were synthesized and tested against non-specific adsorption of the proteins lysozyme and fibrinogen and the settlement of marine diatom Navicula perminuta and marine bacteria Cobetia marina. Both the d-enantiomer and the insertion of Aib protected the peptides from proteolytic degradation. Protein resistance was enhanced with the d-enantiomers while maintaining the resistance toward diatoms. The impact of the imidazolium counterion structure on the organized systems formed by the surfactant 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate, AOT, both in aqueous solutions and in nonpolar solvents is investigated. With this in mind, we investigated if the ionic liquid-like (IL-like) surfactant 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate, emim-AOT, forms direct micelles or vesicles in water. Dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, conductivity, fluorescence spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy measurements were performed to characterize the organized systems in aqueous solutions. We also studied the self-aggregation of emim-AOT, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate, bmim-AOT, and of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate, hmim-AOT, in nonpolar solvents. The results obtained showed that the IL-like surfactant emim-AOT forms direct micelles in water, as sodium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (Na-AOT) does. However, emim-AOT aggregates are larger, have a lower surface charge, are more stable, and have a more polar and less fluid micellar interface than Na-AOT micelles. It was also observed that emim-AOT and hmim-AOT form reverse micelles in nonpolar solvents. The size of the imidazolium cations dramatically influences the size of the reverse micelles and their ability to solubilize water. To prevent the formation of biofilms on material surfaces, the latter must have antibacterial properties. The aim of this study is to investigate the synthesis and the antibacterial effect of a new N-halamine coating based on polydopamine (PDA). The benefits of this coating are multiple, notably the green process used to prepare it and the wide variety of organic or inorganic materials that can be functionalized. selleck compound First, the formation of the PDA coating by oxidative polymerization of dopamine in weak alkaline aqueous solution was studied and characterized. Then, these PDA films were exposed to a NaOCl solution in order to form chloramine functions into the coating, i.e., to immobilize oxidative chlorine on and into the coating. The PDA film chlorination was notably followed in situ by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The influence of the NaOCl solution pH and concentration on chlorination kinetics and on PDA film degradation was evidenced. Finally, the antibacterial properties of the modified PDA coatings were highlighted by testing their antiadhesion and bactericidal properties toward the Escherichia coli bacterial strain. With the advent of the 5G era, surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices with a larger bandwidth and better temperature stability are strongly required, meanwhile the dimensions of devices are continuously scaling down. In this work, a new layout of ZnO/SiO2/Al2O3 SAW devices with embedded electrodes was developed, and with the help of the finite element method (FEM), the propagation characteristics were simulated. Through adopting embedded electrodes, a large electromechanical coupling coefficient (K2) of 6.6% for the Rayleigh mode can be achieved (5 times larger than that of the conventional ZnO/Al2O3 structure), feasible for wideband SAW devices, and a low acoustic velocity (Vp) of 2960 m/s is exhibited simultaneously, which benefits the miniaturization of SAW devices. The dramatic enhancement of K2 is mainly attributed to the more efficient excitation of SAW in piezoelectric films. Furthermore, a SiO2 overlay is added on the top of the structure to gain an excellent zero temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF). Experimentally, we successfully fabricated SAW one-port resonators based on the proposed structure and good characteristics of high K2, low Vp, and small TCF as simulated were confirmed. Our results show that the proposed structure provides a viable route to design SAW devices with a large bandwidth, small size, and robust temperature compensation for practical use.Although labeled as environmentally friendly, wind power can have negative impacts on the environment, such as habitat destruction or wildlife fatalities. Considering the distribution and migratory characteristics of European bats, the negative effects of wind power should be addressed on an appropriate scale. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge on interactions between wind farms and bats in Europe, and compares it with the situation in the countries of the European boreal biogeographic region. We analyzed data from papers published in international and national scientific journals, focusing on studies conducted in Europe. The issue of the impacts wind power has on bats is clearly overlooked in most of the countries of the European boreal region, with low volumes of research available on the topic. This is probably due to fewer wind farms in the area, making this recent issue a less-prioritized topic. However, the Baltic Sea, and the countries surrounding it, are of extreme importance with regards to bat migration, especially for the Pipistrellus nathusii.
