Genetic selection and advances in nutrition have improved broiler growth performance. However, meat quality issues have gained preference over increased growth rate. These meat quality issues may be reduced by lowering dietary amino acid (AA) content. In the present study, 5 common commercial broiler strains were fed either a control or an AA-reduced diet. The control diet was formulated to contain the highest digestible AA (lysine, total sulfur AA, and threonine) levels recommended for the 5 strains. The AA-reduced diet was formulated to contain 20% lower levels of these 3 digestible AA than in the control diet. This resulted in a 5 (strains) × 2 (AA levels) factorial arrangement. A total of 1,280 straight run broilers were randomly allocated to 8 replicate blocks. The AA reduction decreased absolute breast weights of 3 strains on day 42 and 2 strains on day 56, and decreased absolute weights of tender, wing, drumstick, and thigh on both day 42 and 56 for all 5 strains. However, the absolute fat pad weight and relative fat pad and thigh weights to BW were increased in the AA reduction treatments on both day 42 and 56. The AA reduction contributed to the lower breast meat pH on both day 42 and 56, which may have been directly related to decreased severe woody breast myopathy (WBM) incidence on day 42 and moderate WBM incidence on day 56. The severity of WBM was positively related to breast weight in all 10 treatments on both day 42 and 56, with the exception of birds in strain 3 on day 56 that were fed the AA-reduced diet. At the same time, AA reduction was more cost-effective when WBM incidence was considered in a theoretical model. In conclusion, WBM severity was associated with higher breast weight in birds of most strains fed either a control or AA-reduced diet. Dietary AA reduction decreased processing yields but decreased WBM incidence, which may be more economical.Newcastle disease (ND) is a major infectious disease of poultry caused by a virulent strain of Avian Paramyxovirus type-1 (APMV-1). It is a major threat to the poultry industry in many countries of the world including Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to conduct molecular surveillance of ND Virus and identify potential risk factors for nonvaccinated village chicken in Central Rift Valley of Oromia, Ethiopia. check details A total of 84 pooled swab samples, each made from pools of 5 swabs for analysis, from cloacal and tracheal sites of chickens in the Central Rift Valley were collected, and RNA was extracted to carry out real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Out of the 84 pooled swab samples tested for M-gene, 13 (15.48%) samples were found positive for APMV-1. The prevalence of ND in males was found to be 16.10% and that in females was 14.67%. Although the overall ND prevalence was 15.48% (13/84), the highest prevalence was recorded in Adama, 42.86% (6/14), and no positive case was observed in Bote and Bishoftu (P 0.05). In general, the present study provides important information on the epidemiology of ND based on M-gene assay in Central Rift Valley of Oromia, Ethiopia, and highlights the importance of implementing molecular surveillances practice in live poultry markets and village chickens.The abuse of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in feed has led to drug resistance and ecological damage would threaten human health eventually. Natural plants have become a hotspot in the research and application of substituting AGPs because of their advantages of safety, efficiency, and availability. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Macleaya cordata extract (MCE) in the diet of Xuefeng black-bone chicken on laying performance, egg quality, and serum indices. In this study, 576 birds (47-week-old) were evenly distributed between 4 treatments with 6 replicates of 24 hens each. The control group was fed a basal diet without MCE and the remaining groups received 100, 150, or 200 mg/kg MCE for 84 d. Results revealed that the strength and thickness of the eggshell increased significantly with the dietary addition of MCE (P less then 0.05). The serum concentrations of glutathione peroxidase increased in the MCE groups (P less then 0.01). Simultaneously, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone, estradiol as well as serum luteinizing hormone levels also increased with the addition of MCE (P less then 0.05). Compared with the control group, supplementation of MCE significantly decreased the tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 levels (P less then 0.01). In summary, it was concluded that diet addition of 200 mg/kg MCE ameliorated egg quality, enhanced anti-oxidation and immune activity, and regulated hormone secretion of Xuefeng black-bone chicken.
Bouveret's syndrome is characterised by gastric outlet obstruction due to impaction of gallstone in the duodenum through a cholecystoduodenal fistula, having concurrent pancreatitis makes it an even rarer presentation.
We present an 82-year-old woman who presented with acute pancreatitis which she described 2 days of right upper quadrant pain with nausea and vomiting. Biliary obstruction signs were not present. She was known to have cholelithiasis but was for non-operative management due to significant cardiac history and multiple comorbilities.
On initial examination, abdomen was soft with mild right upper quadrant tenderness. Murphy sign was negative. Lipase level was raised at 64,261U/L with cholestasis appearance on liver function test. Bouveret's syndrome was later diagnosed on CT after symptoms of gastric outlet obstruction surfaced during her admission.
An on-table endoscopic stone retrieval was done as first-line treatment. After multiple attempts of stone retrieval via endoscopy, surgical extisk of 12-30%. Prolonged recovery period can be expected due to concurrent inflammatory effects from acute pancreatitis.
Colorectal surveillance via colonoscopy in patients with Lynch syndrome reduces the mortality of colorectal cancer. On the other hand, it is unclear whether surveillance for other malignancies, including small bowel cancer, is beneficial. We report a patient with Lynch syndrome who developed ileal cancer after surgery for ascending colon cancer.
A 47-year-old man visited our hospital for a check-up for positive fecal occult blood. He was diagnosed with ascending colon cancer and met the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of Lynch syndrome based on his past and family history. The Bethesda markers demonstrated high-frequent microsatellite instability. Laparoscopy-assisted right hemicolectomy was performed. He received follow-up colonoscopy the next year, which revealed ileal cancer near the anastomosis. He underwent resection of the second cancer via a laparoscopic approach, and has been free from recurrence for five years.
Small bowel cancer has a dismal prognosis because a high percentage of patients were diagnosed at advanced stages.
