ng-term carbon sequestration.Heterogeneous electron-Fenton processes have been regarded as promising, environmentally friendly techniques for the removal of refractory organics. A new strategy has been brought forward for an electron-Fenton-like process with in situ H2O2 production, but regarding the catalysts, their geometric stability, H2O2 selectivity, and applicability under high pH values still need to be improved. Herein, bifunctional catalysts were proposed for a heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction by introducing Fe atoms into defect-enriched graphene sheets (Fe/N-DG). The structural and compositional results suggested that the excellent dispersing stability of Fe atoms is mainly attributed to the abundant pyridinic-N sites. Optimized Fe1/N-DG exhibited superior mass activity (5.28 A mgFe-1 at 0.6 V vs. RHE) and H2O2 selectivity (86%) under the synergistic effects of Fe‒N and Fe‒O sites. The Fe/N-DG catalysts maintained superior activities for chloramphenicol removal, even under extreme pH conditions (pH≤4 or pH≥10). Of these catalysts, Fe1/N-DG with a predominant Fe-N structure exhibited the best catalytic performance, achieving the complete removal of chloramphenicol within 180 min under alkaline conditions. The possible mechanism for chloramphenicol removal under alkaline conditions was proposed, along with those for the production and activation of H2O2. This study gives new insights into atomic Fe-based catalysts exhibiting excellent selectivity and stability for antibiotic wastewater treatment.Photocatalysis technology is considered as a promising environmental remediation strategy. Herein, photocatalytic degradation of ammonium dinitramide (ADN, main component of propellant) was investigated over Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 (BWO/CN) heterostructure nanosheets prepared by a one-step in-situ hydrothermal method. The operating conditions including ADN initial concentration, catalyst dosage, initial pH, temperature and green oxidizer (hydrogen peroxide) were optimized systematically. Under optimal conditions, the photocatalytic degradation rate of ADN over BWO/CN can reach 98.93% after 80 min visible-light irradiation. Besides, the composite has excellent stability for ADN treatment and nitrate ions are the major degradation products. Furthermore, S-scheme heterojunction mechanism was proposed to explain the extremely high REDOX performance of BWO/CN composite. The introduction of heavy metal-free biomass into the sewage sludge (SS) pyrolysis can effectively improve the biochar properties and reduce the bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals (HMs) in blended biochar. Herein, this study aimed to understand the biochar properties and associated environmental risks of HMs, by comparing the residual contents from the co-pyrolysis of SS with various organic fractions of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) at 550 °C and pyrolysis alone at different temperatures between 350 and 750 °C. The results indicated that, compared with SS pyrolysis alone, co-pyrolysis of SS with various OFMSW (except PVC) lead to lower biochar yields but with higher pH values (increased between 21.80% and 31.70%) and carbon contents (raised between 33.45% and 48.22%) in blended biochars, and the chemical speciation analysis suggested that co-pyrolysis further promoted the HMs transformation into more stable forms which significantly reduce the associated environmental risk of HMs in the blended biochars (the values of RI lower than 55.80). The addition of PVC, however, impeded biochar properties and compromised HMs immobilization during SS pyrolysis. With the recent rapid development of portable smart electronic devices, there is a great demand for gas sensors having high performance, high flexibility, and low energy consumption. We explored the effects of SnO2 shell thickness and operating voltage on the sensing behavior of WS2 nanosheets (NSs) deposited over a flexible substrate in self-heating mode. Commercial WS2 nanowires (NWs) were used as the core and SnO2 shells with various thicknesses were deposited on the core by an advanced physical technique, namely atomic layer deposition (ALD). With regard to CO sensing, a shell thickness of 15 nm operating at 3.4 V, was optimal. Ruxolitinib Alternatively, for NO2 sensing, the optimal shell thickness was 30 nm. Therefore, using engineering design principles to determine the shell material and shell thickness, it is possible to selectively detect reducing gases such as CO, while the response to oxidizing gases is weak. We have also discussed the details of this sensing mechanism. We believe that our results can lead to further study of C-S NSs for sensing studies from different points of views.Uranium minerals are commonly found in soils and sediment across the United States at an average concentration of 2-4 mg/kg. Uranium occurs in the environment primarily in two forms, the oxidized, mostly soluble uranium(VI) form, or the reduced, sparingly soluble reduced uranium(IV) form. Here we describe subsurface geochemical conditions that result in low uranium concentrations in an alluvial aquifer with naturally occurring uranium in soils and sediments in the presence of complexing ligands under oxidizing conditions. Groundwater was saturated with respect to calcite and contained calcium (78-90 mg/L) with elevated levels of carbonate alkalinity (291-416 mg/L as HCO3-). X-ray adsorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy identified that sediment-associated uranium was oxidized as a uranium(VI) form (85%). Calcite was the predominant mineral by mass in the ultrafine fraction in uranium-bearing sediments (>16 mg/kg). Groundwater geochemical modeling indicated calcite and/or a calcium-uranyl-carbonate mineral such as liebigite in equilibrium with groundwater. The δ13C (0.57‰ ± 0.15‰) was indicative of abiotic carbonate deposition. Thus, solid-phase uranium(VI) associated with carbonate is likely maintaining uranium(VI) groundwater levels below the maximum contaminant level (MCL; 30 µg/L), presenting a deposition mechanism for uranium attenuation rather than solely a means of mobilization.Heavy metal pollution of agricultural soils in sewage irrigation areas is a serious environmental issue. Many prior studies have demonstrated that soil around the irrigation area is polluted with heavy metals, even though they had not been irrigated by wastewater. In this study, a paddy field downstream of the Zhangshi Irrigation Area was selected as the study area. The Cd concentrations and their representative input and output fluxes to and from the topsoil were systematically studied. The results showed that 95.5% of soil samples exceeded the screening value of Cd concentration. The Cd input fluxes via irrigation water and atmospheric deposition, accounting for 56.95% and 42.53% of the total input flux, respectively, were the main sources of Cd in soil. Crop harvesting was the main output pathway, accounting for 89.63% of the total output flux. An estimation of the annual mass balance showed that Cd in the studied area was in a state of accumulation, and the annual increase in Cd concentration in topsoil would be 2.
