Among the numerous clean-up techniques for water treatment, sorption methods are widely used for the removal of trace metals. Phragmites australis is a macrophyte commonly used in constructed wetlands for water purification, and in the last decades, its use as biosorbent has attracted increasing attention. In view of a circularly economy approach, this study investigated improvement of trace metal removal by recycling the biomass of P. australis colonizing a constructed wetland, which operates as post-treatment of effluent wastewater from an activated sludge plant serving the textile industrial district of Prato (Italy). After the annual mowing of the reed plants, the biomass was dried and blended to derive a sustainable and eco-friendly biosorbent and its sorption capacity for Fe, Cu, and Zn was investigated comparing the batch system with the easier-to-handle column technique. The possibility of regeneration and reuse of the biosorbent was also evaluated. The biomaterial showed an interesting sorption capacity for Cu, Fe, and Zn, both in batch and in column experiments, especially for Fe ions. The immobilization of the biosorbent in column filters induced some improvement in the removal efficiency, and, in addition, this operation mode has the advantage of being much more suitable for practical applications than the batch process. The present study was designed to evaluate the impact of gamma radiation (60Co) on freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii by using electron microscopic (SEM, TEM) studies. One set of prawns (experimental group) was irradiated (3, 30, 300, and 3000 mGy) by Theratron Phoenix TeleCobalt Unit [P-33], while other set of prawns (control group) was maintained (non-irradiated) separately. Scanning electron microscopic observations of gills and hepatopancreas showed fused and swollen lamella, abnormal gill tips, wrinkled lamellar epithelium, and necrotic epithelium surface in irradiated groups, while no such abnormalities were obvious in the control group. Transmission electron microscopic studies showed damaged nucleus, granulated mitochondria, vacuoles with crystalline granular inclusions, destructed membrane, vacuoles filled with granules, rough endoplasmic reticulum with residual bodies, shrunken mitochondria, dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum, and dilated cisternae of the Golgi body in irradiated groups. The structural abnormalities of vital organs could affect physiological functions such as respiration, osmo-ionic regulation and storage, secretion of the gills, and hepatopancreas, which in turn could adversely affect the growth and survivability of M. rosenbergii.Goethite is the most ubiquitous iron oxide mineral in soils, and adsorption of organic pollutants on goethite dominates the fate and transportation in the environment. In this study, the facet-dependent adsorption behavior of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on goethite was systematically investigated with in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra and two-dimensional correlation analysis (2D-COS). The experimental results indicated that the goethite samples with higher facet proportion of 021/110 exhibited the better adsorption capacity compared to goethite with lower facet proportion of 021/110. The reason is the more existence of singly coordinated sites with higher reactivity on the 021 facet. Moreover, CIP was found to be adsorbed on 021 and 110 facets by forming a tridentate complex involving the bridge coordination of bidentate ligands, H-bonding, and a bidentate chelate complex. In order to improve and establish the localized source profile of PM2.5 in Fuxin, the ashes under dust catcher were collected from four typical coal-fired power plants in Fuxin and twenty-eight components were measured. The source profile of PM2.5 in the soot of the four coal-fired power plants was established. SO42- was the most abundant component in the PM2.5 of the soot of the four coal-fired power plants, followed by Ca2+ and organic carbon (OC). The content of element components in PM2.5 smoke ranges from 5.06 to 10.97%, the content of ionic components ranges from 36.53 to 48.59%, and the total carbon content ranges from 9.43 to 11.36%. The divergence coefficient of PM2.5 source profile in Fuxin coal burning smoke is mostly similar to that of Fushun, whereas the divergence coefficient of Colorado reaches 0.65, indicating that Fuxin coal burning power plant smoke has no similarity to Colorado. see more The order of the geological accumulation index of Ni, Cu, V, Mn, and Cr was Cr (4.58) > Mn (4.42) > V (4.38) > Cu (4.09) > Ni (4.06), showing a heavy pollution level. The health risk assessment model recommended by the USEPA was used to assess the health risk of heavy metals in soot of coal-fired power plants, and the non-carcinogenic risk values of As for children and adults were 45.7 and 4.90, respectively. The carcinogenic risk values of Cr for adults and children were the highest, with values of 3.66 × 10-5 and 2.06 × 10-5, respectively, followed by As.To promote the low photocatalytic efficiency caused by the recombination of electron/hole pairs and widen the photo-response wavelength window, ZnFe2O4@ZnO-N/B/RGO and ZnFe2O4@ZnO-C3N4 ternary heterojunction nanophotocatalysts were designed and successfully prepared through a sol-gel technique. In comparison to bare ZnFe2O4 and ZnO, the ZnFe2O4-ZnO@N/B/RGO and ZnFe2O4@ZnO-C3N4 ternary products showed highly improved photocatalytic properties in the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under ultra-violet (UV) and visible light irradiation. Various physicochemical properties of the photocatalysts were evaluated through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques. The observations indicated that the ternary heterojuncted ZnFe2O4@ZnO-N/B/RGO absorbs lower energy visible light wavelengths, which is an enhancement in the photocatalytic properties of ZnFe2O4@ZnO loaded on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets and graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4). This gives the catalyst photo-Fenton degradation properties.
