The reactions of boric acid and 4-fluorophenylboronic acid with H- and Cl-terminated Si(100) surfaces in solution were investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies reveal that both molecules react preferentially with Cl-Si(100) and not with H-Si(100) at identical conditions. On Cl-Si(100), the reactions introduce boron onto the surface, forming a Si-O-B structure. The quantification of boron surface coverage demonstrates that the 4-fluorophenylboronic acid leads to ∼2.8 times higher boron coverage compared to that of boric acid on Cl-Si(100). Consistent with these observations, density functional theory studies show that the reaction of boric acid and 4-fluorophenylboronic acid is more favorable with the Cl- versus H-terminated surface and that on Cl-Si(100) the reaction with 4-fluorophenylboronic acid is ∼55.3 kJ/mol more thermodynamically favorable than the reaction with boric acid. The computational studies were also used to demonstrate the propensity of the overall approach to form high-coverage monolayers on these surfaces, with implications for selective-area boron-based monolayer doping.Tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TDCIPP) has commonly been used as an additive flame retardant and frequently detected in the aquatic environment and in biological samples worldwide. Recently, it was found that exposure to TDCIPP inhibited the growth of zebrafish, but the relevant molecular mechanisms remained unclear. In this study, 5 day-old crucian carp (Carassius auratus) larvae were treated with 0.5, 5, or 50 μg/L TDCIPP for 90 days; the effect on growth was evaluated; and related molecular mechanisms were explored. Results demonstrated that 5 or 50 μg/L TDCIPP treatment significantly inhibited the growth of crucian carp and downregulated the expression of growth hormones (ghs), growth hormone receptor (ghr), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (igf1). Molecular docking, dual-luciferase reporter gene assay, and in vitro experiments demonstrated that TDCIPP could bind to the growth hormone releasing hormone receptor protein of crucian carp and disturb the stimulation of growth hormone releasing hormone to the expression of ghs, resulting in the decrease of the mRNA level of gh1 and gh2 in pituitary cells. Our findings provide new perceptions into the molecular mechanisms of developmental toxicity of TDCIPP in fish.Tin halide perovskites (THPs) have been established as a lower-toxicity alternative to lead halide perovskites. In spite of the increasing interest, the behavior of photoexcited charges has not been well understood in this class of materials. We here investigate the behavior of excess electrons in a series of tin halide perovskites by employing advanced electronic-structure calculations. We first focus on CsSnBr3 and show that electron localization is favorable in this compound and that bipolaronic states are the most stable form of self-trapped electrons. We then extend the analysis to CsSnI3, CsSnCl3, MASnBr3, FASnBr3, and DMASnBr3 and show that electron bipolarons are stable in all these compounds, thus indicating that strong electron localization is recurrent in THPs.We report a new multi-GPU capable ab initio Hartree-Fock/density functional theory implementation integrated into the open source QUantum Interaction Computational Kernel (QUICK) program. Details on the load balancing algorithms for electron repulsion integrals and exchange correlation quadrature across multiple GPUs are described. Benchmarking studies carried out on up to four GPU nodes, each containing four NVIDIA V100-SXM2 type GPUs demonstrate that our implementation is capable of achieving excellent load balancing and high parallel efficiency. For representative medium to large size protein/organic molecular systems, the observed parallel efficiencies remained above 82% for the Kohn-Sham matrix formation and above 90% for nuclear gradient calculations. The accelerations on NVIDIA A100, P100, and K80 platforms also have realized parallel efficiencies higher than 68% in all tested cases, paving the way for large-scale ab initio electronic structure calculations with QUICK.The promising reactive sorbent zirconium hydroxide (ZH) was challenged with common environmental contaminants (CO2, SO2, and NO2) to determine the impact on chemical warfare agent decomposition. Several environmental adsorbates rapidly formed on the ZH surface through available hydroxyl species and coordinatively unsaturated zirconium sites. ZH decontamination effectiveness was determined using a suite of instrumentation including in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to monitor sarin (GB) decomposition in real time and at ambient pressure. check details Surface products were characterized by ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption enthalpies, entropies, and bond lengths for environmental contaminants and GB decomposition products were estimated using density functional theory (DFT). Consistent with the XPS and DRIFTS results, DFT simulations predicted the relative stabilities of molecular adsorbates and reaction products in the following order CO2 less then NO2 less then GB ≈ SO2. Microbreakthrough capacity measurements on ZH showed a 7-fold increase in the sorption of NO2 vs SO2, which indicates differences in the surface reactivity of these species. GB decomposition was rapid on clean and CO2-dosed ZH and showed reduced decomposition on SO2- and NO2-predosed samples. Despite these findings, the total GB sorption capacity of clean and predosed ZH was consistent across all samples. These data provide insight into the real-world use of ZH as a reactive sorbent for chemical decontamination applications. We report the cycloaddition reactions of 1-alkoxy-1-amino-1,3-butadienes. These doubly activated dienes are prepared on a multigram scale from crotonic acid chloride and its derivatives. The dienes undergo Diels-Alder (DA) and hetero-Diels-Alder (HDA) reactions under mild reaction conditions with a variety of electron-deficient dienophiles to afford cycloadducts in good yields with excellent regioselectivities. The hydrolysis of the DA cycloadducts provides 6-substituted and 6,6-disubstituted 2-cylohexenones, which are versatile building blocks for complex molecule synthesis. The corresponding HDA cycloadducts afford 6-substituted 5,6-dihydropyran-2-ones.
