Fall Monitor can make life safer by offering peace of mind and lowering the risk of falls. Our solution detects signs of falls, sending alerts directly to our 24/7 monitoring center where highly trained agents can call emergency services or family/caregiver contacts if needed. Furthermore, it records and analyses impact data for future outcomes improvement purposes and care team insights.
Medical alert systems with fall detection include sensors attached to pendants worn around the neck, mobile phones and smartwatches, or the base unit of an in-home system. These devices use algorithms and accelerometers to detect abrupt body movements like falling. In addition, this device assesses movement velocity, posture and physical activity to determine whether a fall has taken place and sound an alarm if a fall has indeed taken place; should assistance be required, simply press your help button on your device!
An accelerometer is usually the go-to sensor on smartphones to detect falls, with other experiments testing various sensors such as gyroscopes or pressure sensors as well. Fall detection algorithms generally incorporate features like acceleration magnitude, vertical acceleration, sum vector magnitude and tilt angle into their inputs before producing a probability of fall based on regularized logistic regression models. Some experiments go further by including other parameters like event time/weather/activity of faller at time of event detection.
At our own research facility, we have found that smartphones equipped with accelerometer and gyroscope sensors can reliably detect falls when combined with an easy but effective algorithm. We utilize Google's activity recognition API to classify events that most likely represent falls as well as identify activities of those immediately prior to falls; then log this data in a searchable web portal where researchers and clinicians can study it further. During our own study, our system accurately predicted falls in 26 percent of cases while correctly classifying transition between postures 11 percent of times as well as correctly classifying vehicles 9 percent of cases!
Hanks conducted an evaluation of the most popular fall detector devices available to find which ones performed best. We employed a scaled version of a test developed at the University of Minnesota to assess each product's ability to detect falls accurately, as well as ease of cancellation and whether companies offered free or discounted replacement equipment if he wanted to switch brands.
Medical alerts with fall detection require a monitoring subscription in order to contact emergency services or call family and friends if the user cannot press their help button themselves. Familyr Most companies also notify a monitoring center of potential falls depending on your care plan or individual needs.
