However, immunity, meat quality and nutrient utilisation were not affected by dietary treatments.The aim of this case study is to demonstrate the very rare coincidental existence and management of a Killian-Jamieson diverticulum (KJD) during thyroid surgery. A 57-year-old woman was referred to our clinic with a malignant thyroid nodule and the complaint of a sore throat. There were no suspicions concerning a diverticulum on examining her with flexible laryngoscopy or ultrasound imaging. During the right central neck dissection, we noticed a 3 × 3 cm KJD and resected it while preserving the recurrent laryngeal nerve. After the successful operation, we questioned the patient and learned that for 1 year she had an occasional complaint of dysphagia. Postoperatively, there was no vocal cord palsy or hypocalcemia, and there was no pharyngoesophageal leak after oral alimentation. There was no recurrence or complaint for KJD or papillary carcinoma for 8 years follow-up. Nonspecific symptoms like a sore throat should be investigated, and patients should be questioned for all aerodigestive symptoms. If necessary, further investigation should be undertaken for a differential diagnosis.Angioleiomyomas are smooth muscle masses originating from blood vessel tunica media. As the pandemic evolves, this cohort of infected, chronically intubated and ventilated individuals will become more prevalent and may require tracheostomy to aid in recovery. Unfortunately, tracheostomy is an aerosol-generating procedure which poses high risks to all members within the operating room, as described by previous authors. There is an urgent need to explore and develop methods to maximize the safety of tracheostomy and other aerosol-generating procedures in order to reduce intraoperative transmission. However, the information concerning its natural history remains unclear. In this report, we presented a patient with parapharyngeal SFT/HPC, who was not immediately treated with surgical resection at first diagnosis. After approximately 3 years, the tumor volume doubling time (TVDT) and specific growth rate (SGR) could be measured through 3 serial magnetic resonance imagings. The TVDTs in the early and late pretreatment stages were 350 and 180 days, respectively, while the SGRs were 0.002 and 0.003, respectively. The growth rate of this disease entity is generally slow and may accelerate in the disease process.Operative management of emergency general surgery (EGS) diagnoses involves a range of procedures which can carry high morbidity and mortality. Little is known about the impact of obesity on patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine the association between body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2 and mortality for EGS patients. We hypothesized that obese patients would have increased mortality rates.A regional integrated health system EGS registry derived from The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma EGS ICD-9 codes was analyzed from January 2013 to October 2015. Patients were stratified into BMI categories based on WHO classifications. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality. Longer-term mortality with linkage to the Social Security Death Index was also examined. Univariate and multivariable analyses were performed.A total of 60 604 encounters were identified and 7183 (11.9%) underwent operative intervention. Patient characteristics include 53% women, mean age 58.2 ± 18.7 years, 64.2% >BMI 30 kg/m2, 30.2% with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 19% with congestive heart failure, and 31.1% with diabetes. The most common procedure was laparoscopic cholecystectomy (36.4%). Overall, 90-day mortality was 10.9%. In multivariable analysis, all classes of obesity were protective against mortality compared to normal BMI. Underweight patients had increased risk of inpatient (OR = 1.9, CI = 1.7-2.3), 30-day (OR = 1.9, CI = 1.7-2.1), 90-day (OR = 1.8, CI 1.6-2.0), 1-year (OR = 1.8, CI = 1.7-2.0), and 3-year mortality (OR = 1.7, CI = 1.6-1.9).When stratified by BMI, underweight EGS patients have the highest odds of death. Paradoxically, obesity appears protective against death, even when controlling for potentially confounding factors. Increased rates of nonoperative management in the obese population may impact these findings.
