This study was conducted to investigate the role of the miR-210/Caspase8ap2 pathway in apoptosis and autophagy in hypoxic myocardial cells.
The miR-control, miR-210 mimic, and miR-210 inhibitor were transfected into rat myocardial H9C2 cells. The transfection efficiency of exogenous miR-210 was determined by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). H9C2 cells were then treated with CoCl2 for 24, 48, and 72 h to generate a myocardial injury model. The apoptosis of H9C2 cells was assessed by flow cytometry. Additionally, a western blot assay was used to determine the expression of the autophagy-associated proteins light chain 3 (LC3), p62 and Beclin-1, and apoptosis-associated proteins Caspase8ap2, cleaved caspase 8, and cleaved caspase 3.
We determined that a 48 h hypoxia treatment duration in H9C2 cardiomyocytes induced myocardial injury. Additionally, the overexpression of miR-210 significantly inhibited cell apoptosis. MiR-210 suppressed autophagy by upregulating p62 and downregulating LC3II/I in hypoxic H9C2 cells. Caspase8ap2 was a putative target of miR-210, miR-210 mediated apoptosis, and autophagy of H9C2 cells via suppressing Caspase8ap2. Furthermore, the expression of caspase 8, caspase 3, and Beclin-1 were decreased in response to miR-210.

To evaluate the effect of minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) simulator for cardiac residency training.
A total of 26 resident surgeons who had never trained for coronary artery anastomosis participated in this training program. They received coronary artery anastomosis training on off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) simulator for 15 h. After training, their performance of anastomosis was evaluated on the OPCAB simulator according to 12 items and a 5-point global rating scale. Based on the total score of assessment, those with an individual score of 12-36 formed group A, while group B was composed of the remaining trainees. The two groups then received another 15 h coronary artery anastomosis training on the MIDCAB simulator, and the performance was assessed.
Trainees improved their performance of coronary artery anastomosis after training on the OPCAB simulator. Group A was composed of 7 trainees with an individual with a total score of 12-36 points and group B was composed of the remaining 19 trainees. After MIDCAB simulator training, significant differences were noted in the pre- and post-training values in the A group (P < .001), and the assessment value of group A was significantly better than those of group B (P < .05). No significant difference was detected between pre- and post-training values in group B after MIDCAB simulator training (P > .05).
We concluded that trainees who performed well in OPCAB simulation training can also perform better in MIDCAB, and our designed MIDCAB simulator was useful for residency training.

The current guidelines associate indications for surgery in mitral regurgitation (MR) with left ventricle size and function. However, there is not enough emphasis in current guidelines on left atrial function, which is thought to be an important factor predicting adverse outcomes in MR. The aim of this study was to investigate the left atrial function at different stages of mitral regurgitation and its value in predicting the indications of mitral valve surgery.
This was a retrospective study with 163 consecutive chronic primary MR patients who underwent color doppler echocardiography at the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Second People's Hospital between January 2016 and June 2018. All patients were in sinus rhythm, classified into three groups, according the degree of mitral regurgitation. Comparison was made with 30 control patients. Postoperative atrial fibrillation (PoAF) is the most common arrhythmic complication detected after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). It is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, especially in elderly patients. Mean platelet volume (MPV) shows the activation of platelets effective in the inflammatory and thrombotic process. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relations between the preoperative MPV levels and development of PoAF in isolated CABG in elderly patients.
A total of 103 elderly patients (aged ≥ 65 years), who underwent isolated CABG and were at preoperative sinus rhythm, were included in the study. Patients who did not have PoAF were identified as Group 1 (N = 74), and those with PoAF were identified as Group 2 (N = 29).
PoAF incidence was 28.2%. Preoperative MPV level was 8.41 ± 1.13 fL in Group 1, and 9.28 ± 1.00 fL in Group 2. The difference was statistically significant (P < .001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age, preoperative hemoglobin, and preoperative MPV were independent predictive factors for PoAF development (OR [odds ratio] 1.
