How to Design a Folding Separation Wall
If you’re designing a new space and considering how to incorporate an operable partition wall, or perhaps you need to reconfigure an existing one, there are several factors to consider. You’ll want to find a product that meets your budgetary needs while also providing an excellent level of performance. You’ll also want to determine whether you need a solution that’s designed to provide an acoustical separation between separated spaces, or simply a means of creating a temporary space that allows for more movement in the area.

Generally, a folding separation wall is made up of interlocking panels anchored to tracking systems in the floor and ceiling. These panels can be retracted as needed to create a new work space, and then repositioned or concealed in a closet when not in use. These partitions are ideal for offices, schools, gyms, auditoriums, hotels and more.

There are a number of different types of movable walls available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, accordion doors or concertina walls can provide an economical moveable partition solution. However, these walls don’t flatten completely when retracted and do not perform as well acoustically as a full-wall movable partition.

For a more upscale and versatile option, you can choose to design an egress door into your sliding partition wall system. Essentially, this is a swinging “traditional door” that can be opened and closed to allow movement between spaces even when the rest of the partition remains closed. This allows functions to continue uninterrupted and allows access to emergency egress.

The best way to determine your requirements for a folding separation wall is to consult the experts at a qualified drywall contractor. They can advise you on the best solutions for your project and help you with installation, too. They can also recommend the appropriate materials and finishes to match your aesthetic and functional goals.

Alternatively, you can DIY your own room divider. For instance, you can turn a bookcase into a room divider by placing books on each shelf to create the desired separation. You can also construct a unique hanging divider using pieces of plywood or rigid foam board that are painted and stenciled in an interesting pattern. Just be sure to map out your patterns and then apply them to the plywood or foam boards before cutting them out.

Another option for a movable partition wall is an area separation fire wall. These are constructed with 2- and 3-hour rated gypsum fire walls. The construction details for these can be found in the National Gypsum Company’s The Wood Book(tm). 2-hour fire walls are constructed with light-gauge steel H-studs that friction fit two layers of 1" shaftliner panels between studs, with a minimum of 34" of air space on each side.
