Two additional experiments suggest that demeaning could be a systematic error (Studies 5 and 6), as charity donors and students underestimated the importance of homeless people's psychological (vs. physical) needs compared with self-reports and choices from homeless people. Underestimating the importance of others' psychological needs could impair the ability to help others. These experiments indicate that demeaning is a unique facet of dehumanization reflecting a reliable, consequential, and potentially mistaken understanding of others' minds. Method A total of 156 veterans with mental illnesses (Mage = 37.85, SD = 10.74) were recruited from Amazon MTurk to complete an online survey consisting of the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S), the Brief Resilience Scale, the PERMA-Profiler, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule II. Results Results revealed that grit is a multidimensional construct in veterans with mental illnesses. The Grit-S was found to have acceptable reliability and concurrent validity. Grit was found to be negatively associated with functional disability in veterans with mental illnesses after controlling for demographic variables. Conclusions and Implications The Grit-S is a multidimensional, reliable, and valid scale for measuring grit in veterans with mental illnesses. The present study explores multiple factors that may contribute to the variation in WSWs' experiences of posttraumatic stress symptoms, including workers' racial identity, experiences of discrimination and control over their working conditions, the site of selling sex, and their clients' perceived sexual entitlement and violence. The study sample consisted of 314 self-identified WSWs. Online invitations to participate in a 30-min survey were sent to WSWs in the United States and Canada who advertise their services online on sites such as Facebook, the Erotic Review, and Backpages. The hypothesized structure of associations between the variables was tested using structural equation modeling. The model accounted for 68% of the variation in the traumatic stress reported, with direct and indirect effects for workers' racial identity, the site where they sell sex, and experiences of discrimination, especially by police. Clients' violence, on the contrary, was indirectly associated with traumatic stress, as violent clients were also significantly more likely to be perceived as sexually entitled, which, in turn, was the strongest predictor of higher traumatic stress. Building on research showing a positive association between problematic drinking and relationship dissatisfaction and relationship dissatisfaction and IPA, we examined whether relationship dissatisfaction accounted for the relation between problematic drinking and IPA perpetration in couples using statistical modeling that accounted for the interdependence between partners. Our results showed that (a) actor problematic drinking was related to actor psychological and physical IPA perpetration and that this relation was partially explained by actor relationship dissatisfaction, (b) partner problematic drinking was related to actor physical and psychological IPA perpetration and that this relation was partially explained by actor relationship dissatisfaction, and (c) partner problematic drinking was related to actor psychological IPA perpetration and that this relation was partially explained by partner relationship dissatisfaction. Together, our results highlight that when partner interdependence is considered, relationship dissatisfaction could be a potential mechanism of the alcohol-IPA association and provide some evidence for different pathways for psychological and physical aggression. Yet, mechanisms underlying the relation between alcohol use problems and opioid misuse and dependence have yet to be fully explored among this population. Distress tolerance, reflecting the perceived ability to withstand negative emotional states, has demonstrated independent associations with alcohol use problems and opioid misuse, but these associations have not been explored among persons with chronic pain. The present study examined the moderating role of distress tolerance in terms of the association between alcohol use problems with opioid misuse and severity of opioid dependence. Participants included 424 adults (74.1% female; Mage = 38.3, SD = 11.1) reporting current chronic pain and opioid medication use. Results indicated that alcohol use problems were significantly associated with current opioid misuse (B = 0.54, p less then .001) and severity of opioid dependence (B = 0.08, p = .002) only for those with lower distress tolerance. These findings suggest that among individuals with chronic pain, the association between alcohol use problems and opioid misuse as well as opioid dependence severity is amplified among those with lower perceived distress tolerance. Understanding how change in generalized anxiety and depression are related during counseling may help improve treatment. College student data (N = 51,922) from university and college counseling centers across the United States were used to examine relationships between change in generalized anxiety and depression across 12 counseling sessions using bivariate dual change score models. RIN1 research buy Results suggested greater improvement in depression was related to greater improvement in generalized anxiety across sessions, but greater improvement in generalized anxiety was related to less improvement in depression across sessions. This same pattern of results generalized to individuals who attended counseling with concerns in anxiety only, depression only, and both anxiety and depression. Although there were general improvements in generalized anxiety and depression across counseling sessions, greater improvement in depression at earlier sessions appeared to be a leading indicator of greater improvement in generalized anxiety at later sessions.
