The finding that multiple chronic diseases show lower levels of CoQ10 has led to the possibility that CoQ10 supplementation could be an effective approach to ameliorate or prevent disease progression. In this review, we discuss the state of the art regarding the role of CoQ10 in health and disease and describe the latest clinical studies which have tested the effects of CoQ10 supplementation in inflammatory diseases. The results of these studies indicate that individuals suffering from inflammation-related diseases show improvement under the CoQ10 supplementation protocol. However, these results have been inconsistent, leading to the need for additional studies at the preclinical and clinical levels, involving a greater number of subjects and different treatment regimes.

Forty eyes of 20 volunteers were enrolled. A significant reduction in SFCT (-14μm, p<0.0001) occurred at 1h after the Red Bull intake, and was even more important (-20.14μm, p<0.0001) in eyes with particularly thick choroids (≥ 395μm). SFCT measurements at 4h were comparable to baseline.

A concomitant ingestion of caffeine and taurine can induce a transient choroidal thinning that is more marked in eyes with thick choroids.

The prevalence of malnutrition among adult Filipino patients with COVID 19 is 71.83%. Malnutrition has long been associated with poor outcomes among patients with pneumonia. This may be due to the increased risk of malnourished patients to develop impaired muscle and respiratory function. We aimed to determine the outcomes of adult COVID 19 patients admitted in a tertiary government hospital accordingly to nutrition status and risk.

Retrospective study on the adult COVID 19 patients admitted from July 15 to September 15, 2020 who were screened using the Philippine Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition modified Subjective Global Assessment Grade tool. Chi-square or Fisher exact test, as well as Mann-Whitney U test or Kruskal-Wallis with post-hoc Dunn test, as appropriate were done. Clinical details, laboratory investigations, demographic and socioeconomic parameters of all children<2 years of age, diagnosed with ITS between August 2019 and November 2020 was obtained by a retrospective chart review. The study population was divided into two subgroups based on the presence/absence of laryngomalacia and different variables were compared between the two subgroups.

During the study period, 22 ITS and 13 pre-ITS cases were identified, out of which 5 ITS cases had lar seemingly apparent association between ITS and laryngomalacia, large prospective controlled studies with long-term follow-up are necessary to prove this association.

The alteration of kidney function in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) is a frequent, but still poorly investigated, consequence of AN. In this study, we analyzed glomerular filtration rate with the Cockroft-Gault formula in a group of 148 adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa and correlated it to clinical and biochemical data collected at admission.

A retrospective study was conducted on 148 patients hospitalized from 2016 to 2019 for severe malnutrition due to restrictive AN. We measured glomerular filtration rate and correlated it with the patients' anamnestic history, nutritional status and biochemical data.

For the 148 AN patients, 40 (27%) resulted at admission at stage 1 of kidney damage (GFR>90mL/min), 88 patients (59%) at stage 2 (GFR 89-60mL/min), 17 patients (11%) at stage 3A (GFR 59-45mL/min) and 3 patients (2%) at stage 3B (GFR 44-30mL/min). Results outlined a correlation between the entity of kidney damage and BMI at admission and before illness onset, but not with the rapidity and entity of weight loss.
