mplement strategies to reduce the cardiovascular risk in Brazilian patients with diabetes and drive cost savings. In New York City (NYC), the aspiring target of zero waste to landfills is robustly engaging the often poorly understood solid waste management technique of reuse. The reuse activities occurring in NYC are reported, accounting for the quantities of reuse of various products, such as furniture, appliances and automobile accessories, amongst others. The quantities of products are translated to reuse mass and net CO2-eq emissions saved as a consequence of reuse. This quantitative assessment employs the Reuse Impact Calculator (RIC), based on the Waste Reduction Model (WARM). The RIC is a novel calculator used to quantitatively assess the environmental impact of material reuse. It uses the information about the material to be reused from the WARM database and estimates the emissions and energy savings based on the product's final destination, that is, reuse, landfill, recycle or composting. A close monitoring of reuse activities in NYC shows 45 × 106 kg of reuse occurring for different products that would otherwise be directed to landfills. The net emissions reduced annually by reuse is approximately 122 × 106 kg of CO2-eq. This article compares the NYC reuse activities with that occurring in some select cities of the world. It is shown that the maximum recycle potential is saturated at 66%, and only auxiliary strategies like reuse can achieve the zero waste to landfill ambitions. Furthermore, this work discusses the role of reuse in the circular economy, wherein the resource utilization is maximized by increasing the shelf life of the product, and thereby enabling a maximum reuse potential. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) plays a pivotal role in the maintenance and regulation of the neural microenvironment. The BBB breakdown is a pathological change in early Alzheimer's disease (AD). RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the regulation of BBB permeability. Our study demonstrates the role of TRA2A/LINC00662/ELK4 axis in regulating BBB permeability in AD microenvironment. In Aβ1-42-incubated microvascular endothelial cells (ECs) of the BBB model in vitro, TRA2A and LINC00662 were enriched. TRA2A increased the stability of LINC00662 by binding with it. The knockdown of either TRA2A or LINC00662 decreased BBB permeability due to increased expression of tight junction-related proteins. ELK4 was less expressed in the BBB model in AD microenvironment in vitro. LINC00662 mediated the degradation of ELK4 mRNA by SMD pathway. Downregulation of ELK4 increased BBB permeability by increasing the tight junction-related protein expression.TRA2A/LINC00662/ELK4 axis plays a crucial role in the regulation of BBB permeability in AD microenvironment, which may provide a novel target for the therapy of AD.The understanding of the effects of compounds on the gut microbiome is limited. In particular, it is unclear whether structurally similar compounds would have similar or distinct effects on the gut microbiome. Here, we selected berberine (BBR), an isoquinoline quaternary alkaloid, and 16 structural analogs and evaluated their effects on seven individual gut microbiomes cultured in vitro. The responses of the individual microbiomes were evaluated by metaproteomic profiles and by assessing butyrate production. We show that both interindividual differences and compound treatments significantly contributed to the variance of metaproteomic profiles. BBR and eight analogs led to changes in proteins involved in microbial defense and stress responses and enrichment of proteins from Verrucomicrobia, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes phyla. It also led to a decrease in proteins from the Firmicutes phylum and its Clostridiales order which correlated to decrease proteins involved in the butyrate production pathway and butyrate concentration. Three of the compounds, sanguinarine, chelerythrine, and ethoxysanguinarine, activated bacterial protective mechanisms, enriched Proteobacteria, increased opacity proteins, and markedly reduced butyrate production. Dihydroberberine had a similar function to BBR in enriching the Akkermansia genus. In addition, it showed less overall adverse impacts on the functionality of the gut microbiome, including a better maintenance of the butyrate level. Our study shows that ex vivo microbiome assay can assess differential regulating effects of compounds with subtle differences and reveals that compound analogs can have distinct effects on the microbiome.Purpose To examine the relationships among therapist-reported, patient-reported, and objective assessment scores of balance function. Methods Inpatients with stroke and occupational therapists were recruited. The objective balance scores were measured using the Balance Computerized Adaptive Testing (Balance CAT) system. read more The therapist and patient-reported scores were evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and Likert-type scale. Results Eighty-eight patients and 16 therapists participated. The correlations (r= 0.64 and 0.65; R-squared about 0.42 at baseline and follow-up assessments, respectively) between the therapist-reported VAS scores and the Balance CAT system were larger than those (r = 0.31 and 0.21) between the patient-reported VAS scores and the Balance CAT system. Low correlations (r = 0.27 and 0.26 for VAS and Likert-type scores, respectively) were found between the therapist-reported and patient-reported change scores. Low correlations (r = 0.12-0.17) were found between the change scores of therapist- and patient-reported ratings and those of the Balance CAT system. Conclusions The therapists' judgments explained less then 50% of variance of the Balance CAT system scores. Neither therapist-reported nor patient-reported change scores reflected the changes demonstrated by the objective assessments. Further studies are warranted to confirm our findings.Implications for RehabilitationNeither therapist- nor patient-reported balance function and change could effectively reflect the scores resulting from objective assessments. The routine use of objective balance assessments should not be replaced by therapists' subjective judgments.Communications regarding the balance function measured by objective assessments between therapists and patients can help patients to better understand their balance function and progress.
