The heavy metal contents (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg, and As) of 88 surface sediment samples from the western Sunda Shelf were analyzed to determine their spatial distribution patterns and contamination status. The results indicated that the study area was not significantly contaminated overall at the time of the study; however, Cd, As, and Hg were at levels corresponding to moderate contamination at many stations located in the Pahang River estuary, Kelantan River estuary, and north-eastern region of the study area, primarily because of anthropogenic activities.Shallow seafloor marine litter (ML) is the least studied component of ML, and a better understanding of its distribution and accumulation patterns is needed to develop efficient management practices. Abundance and composition of seafloor ML were quantified in two eastern Adriatic Natura 2000 sites (Vis Island and Pakleni Islands), applying a structured sampling design to test whether the intensity of nautical tourism or exposure to prevailing winds and currents are significant drivers determining the ML distribution on shallow, coastal seafloor. ML was widespread and present in considerable amounts across the entire studied area, regardless of the remoteness from most known potential ML sources. Tourism intensity and exposure seem not to be significant predictors of ML accumulation in the investigated Natura 2000 sites. ML abundances displayed large small-scale spatial variation, while for ML composition at a larger scale, regional differences between the two Natura 2000 sites were detected. The Pakleni Islands are mainly polluted by glass items, suggesting a local vessel-based source. The ML composition on Vis Island, with a predominance of plastics, is more determined by long-distance transport. The study indicates the complexity and multi-layeredness of processes driving the patterns of seafloor ML accumulation. Hence, it is suggested to mitigate the issue by addressing the root causes inadequate waste management and lack of public awareness.
Anti-seizure medication (ASM) is necessary to manage epilepsy and often prescribed to children and adolescents, but can lead to iatrogenic effects, including bone fragility by altering bone metabolism. Disrupting bone metabolism during crucial developmental stages could have a lasting adverse effect on bone health. Therefore, the objective of this propensity score-matched, observational cohort study was to determine if age when initiating ASM therapy across developmental stages (from pre- to post-puberty) for individuals with epilepsy was associated with an increased risk of fragility fracture.

Data from 01/01/2011 to 12/31/2018 were extracted from Optum Clinformatics® Data Mart. To examine recent vaccination trends among Brazilian children during their first year of life, and the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on these trends.

Monthly vaccination and birth data from the DATASUS (Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System) database of the Ministry of Health of Brazil were obtained from January 2017 to December 2020. Interrupted time series analysis was used to compare vaccination trends before and after March 2020, when isolation measures were first implemented in Brazil.

There was no strong evidence of a significant change in trends during the study period, or before and during the pandemic at national level. However, the mean number of vaccinations per child was 10.6, which is lower than the 13 doses expected under the immunization schedule.

Although the pandemic did not appreciably impact on vaccinations, incomplete immunization among children aged <1 year in Brazil is cause for concern. A potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on specific antigens or regional and sociodemographic disparities in vaccinations cannot be ruled out without further research.
