Archne, dia terlalu sombong dengan kemampuannya dalam menenun + dan menyatakan kepada Athena bahwa ia bisa datang bertanding jika menginginkannya. Namun, Athena, dalam kedok seorang wanita tua, datang memperingatkan dan memberi kesempatan Arachne untuk menarik ucapannya. Apa yang terjadi selanjutnya? Arachne justru menghina si wanita tua sehingga membuat Athena menunjukkan dirinya yang sebenarnya.
Mereka akhirnya tetap berkompetisi dengan Arachne memilih kekurangan para dewa sebagai tema tenunannya. Pilihan tema ini membuat Athena marah dan menghancurkan alat tenun sekaligus hasil tenunan Arachne. Arachne mencoba menggantung diri tapi Athena bertindak lebih cepat dengan mengubah Arachne menjadi laba-laba yang akan menenun tanpa henti.
Nama Arachne kemudian diadaptasi menjadi nama spesies kelompok laba-laba, arachnid.
