The common marmoset, a New World monkey, has a primate-specific cortex with approximately 40 Brodmann areas. Genetically encoded calcium indicator (GECI) techniques have been applied to study the functional organization of the marmoset cortex. The success of GCaMP (a green fluorescent of GECI) imaging and other advances, including optogenetic approaches, provide an interesting and exciting opportunity to study the primate brain at the molecular and cellular levels, leading to an understanding of primate neural circuits. These approaches will help advance our knowledge on cognition in primates, including humans, and therapy for human neurological and psychiatric disorders.Maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common medical complications of pregnancy, which can adversely affect the short- and long-term health of mothers and newborns. In recent years, several studies have revealed the early impact of maternal hyperglycemia on fetal growth trajectory and birth weight abnormalities in GDM-exposed pregnancies. However, an intense debate continues regarding the mode and optimal timing of diagnosis and treatment of this condition. The purpose of this review is to provide a brief overview of the understanding of GDM and its implications for fetal growth, addressing the modulatory role of medical nutrition therapy and available pharmacological antidiabetic agents (i.e. insulin, metformin, and glyburide), and to identify gaps in current knowledge toward which future research should be directed. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and its end products, the glucocorticoids, are critical to responding appropriately to stressors. Subsequently, many studies have sought relationships between glucocorticoids and measures of health or fitness, but such relationships are at best highly context dependent. Recently, some endocrinologists have started to suggest that a focus on HPA flexibility, the ability of an individual to mount appropriate responses to different stressors, could be useful. Here, we tested the hypothesis that expression of FKBP5, a cochaperone in the glucocorticoid receptor complex, is a simple and reliable proxy of HPA flexibility in a wild songbird, the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). We quantified HPA flexibility in a novel way, using guidance from research on heart rhythm regulation. As predicted, we found that adult sparrows with low stress-induced FKBP5 expression in the hypothalamus exhibited high HPA flexibility. Moreover, low FKBP5 expression was associated with greater exploratory disposition and were better at maintaining body mass under stressful conditions. Altogether, these results suggest that FKBP5 may be important in the regulation of HPA flexibility, potentially affecting how individuals cope with natural and anthropogenic adversity.Given the fundamental role played by the intestinal microbial community in influencing host health, it is not surprising that recent decades have been marked by increased efforts to determine the taxonomic composition of the human gut microbiota and its associated functions. Despite their generally accepted importance, these large-scale human-centered studies prevent an exhaustive overview of those mechanisms and factors that contribute to the mammalian gut microbiota assembly. However, Next-Generation Sequencing techniques and associated bioinformatic tools provide an exciting opportunity to rapidly expand our knowledge on the intestinal microbial communities associated with members of the Mammalia class. These non-human-focused studies established that dietary, host phylogeny, host physiology and anthropogenic influences represent the main factors driving the selection of a specific gut microbial consortium in mammals. The current review is aimed at providing a comprehensive overview on the impact that the above-mentioned factors exert on the assembly of the mammalian gut microbiota.Polarity items are linguistic expressions such as any, at all, some, which are acceptable in some linguistic environments but not others. Crucially, whether a polarity item is acceptable in a given environment is argued to depend on the inferences (in the reasoning sense) that this environment allows. We show that the inferential judgments reported for a given environment are modified in the presence of polarity items. Hence, there is a two-way influence between linguistic and reasoning abilities the linguistic acceptability of polarity items is dependent on reasoning facts and, conversely, reasoning judgments can be altered by the mere addition of seemingly innocuous polarity items. In the western United States, Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls (Acari Ixodidae) is the primary vector of the agents causing Lyme disease and granulocytic anaplasmosis in humans. The geographic distribution of the tick is associated with climatic variables that include temperature, precipitation, and humidity, and biotic factors such as the spatial distribution of its primary vertebrate hosts. Here, we explore (1) how climate change may alter the geographic distribution of I. pacificus in California, USA, during the 21st century, and (2) the spatial overlap among predicted changes in tick habitat suitability, land access, and ownership. Maps of potential future suitability for I. pacificus were generated by applying climate-based species distribution models to a multi-model ensemble of climate change projections for the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 (moderate emission) and 8.5 (high emission) scenarios for two future periods mid-century (2026-2045) and end-of-century (2086-2099). Areas climaticess by informing public health and vector control decision-makers.In West Africa, cross-border transhumance, also called seasonal migration, is known to be a very important animal production strategy, as it involves about 70 to 90% of cattle. In spite of the cattle movements, some strategic areas of transhumance remain poorly explored regarding ticks and their associated pathogens investigations. Ginkgolic The purpose of this study is to evaluate the involvement of transhumance in the spread of cattle ticks and associated pathogens in Burkina Faso (BF) and Benin (BN), in a context of speedy invasion of West African livestock by Rhipicephalus microplus. A longitudinal survey was performed on 210 cattle from BF, monitored for ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBP) during one seasonal transhumance. The first sampling coded "T0BF" took place in eastern BF, at the transhumance departure. A second sampling "T1BN" was carried out in northern BN, the transhumance arrival zone. A third sampling "T2BF" was done at the return of cattle in eastern BF. Ticks were morphologically identified and TBP detected with reverse line blot hybridization (RLB) assay.
