12 trained male cyclists (age 31.2±7; weight 71.3±7kg, VO
58.4±3.7mL/kg/min) randomly performed two Time to Exhaustion Tests (TTE) at 75% of normothermic peak power output (PPO), one in normothermia (N,18°C-50% RH) and one in the heat (H,35°C-50% RH), before and after a VSTAP intervention, consisting of 3 days-90min exercise (10min at 30% of PPO+80min at 50% of PPO) in H (≈4.5h of heat exposure). Performance time of TTEs and physiological and perceptual variables of both TTEs and training sessions (T1, T2 and T3) were evaluated.

Magnitude Based Inferences (MBI) revealed 92/6/1% and 62/27/11% chances of positive/trivial/negative effects of VSTAP of improving performance in H (+17%) and in N (+9%), respectively. Heart Rate (HR) decreased from T1 to T3 (p<0.001) and T2 to T3 (p<0.001), whereas Tympanic Temperature (TyT) decreased from T1 to T2 (p=0.047) and from T1 to T3 (p=0.007). Furthermore, despite the increased tolerance to target Power Output (PO) throughout training sessions, RPE decreased from T1 to T3 (p=0.032).

The VSTAP determined meaningful physiological (i.e. decreased HR and TyT) and perceptual (i.e. decreased RPE) adaptations to submaximal exercise. Furthermore, showing good chances to improve performance in the heat, it represents a valid acclimation strategy to be implemented when no longer acclimation period is possible. Finally, no cross-over effect of the VSTAP on performance in temperate conditions was detected.

This study tested the hypothesis that simultaneous internal cooling and rehydration by ingesting ice slurry prevents the excessive decrease in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and promotes recovery of core and skin temperatures in male athletes. Seven male athletes participated in this randomized controlled trial with a crossover design. The participants ran on a treadmill at 75% of their maximal oxygen uptake in the heat (35 °C, 60% relative humidity), up to exhaustion. Immediately after exercise, participants ingested either 4 g⋅kg -1 body weight of ice slurry (0.5 °C, ICE) or a control beverage (28 °C, CON). The participants then recovered by sitting for 20 min. We measured participants' rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperature (Tsk), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), cardiac output (CO), total peripheral resistance (TPR), and physiological strain index (PSI) before exercise (Pre), after running to exhaustion (PEx), and at 0 (P0), 10 (P10), and 20 (P20) minutes after ice slurry or control beverage ingestion. MAP, CO, HR, TPR, or PSI did not change significantly during the recovery period. At P10 and P20, Tre and Tsk significantly decreased in the ICE group compared to the CON group (p less then 0.05). These results suggested that ingestion of ice slurry, post-exercise, promoted core and skin temperature recovery but did not affect the central and peripheral cardiovascular responses during the acute recovery period.Global warming and intensifying extreme heat events may affect avian reproductive success and costs, particularly in hot, arid environments. This may be due in part to a trade-off energy expenditure to deal with the temperature fluctuation. Together, these findings suggest that juvenile Schizothorax prenanti are resilient to daily fluctuations within the temperature tested here.Thermal conditioning has been introduced as a cost-effective way to improve performance and thermotolerance in broilers. However, since all the trials were performed under various experimental conditions, it appears difficult to draw general conclusions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify the response of broilers to thermal conditioning through a meta-analysis approach. A literature search was conducted on Scopus, PubMed, Scielo, Web of Science, and Google scholar in December 2020. A restricted maximum likelihood random effect model was used to pool the effect sizes from the body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and body temperature (Tb). BWG, FI, and Tb were computed using the standardized mean difference (SMD) while FCR was computed using mean differences (MD) with a 95% confidence interval (IC). Growth performances were evaluated during the thermoneutral conditions while Tb was evaluated after either acute or chronic heat stress after early age thermal conditioning.
