Daily travel through the urban fabric exposes urban dwellers to a range of environmental conditions that may have an impact on their health and wellbeing. Knowledge about exposures during travel, their associations with travel behavior, and their social and health outcomes are still limited. (R)-Propranolol supplier In our review, we aim to explain how the current environmental exposure research addresses the interactions between human and environmental systems during travel through their spatial, temporal and contextual dimensions. Based on the 104 selected studies, we identify significant recent advances in addressing the spatiotemporal dynamics of exposure during travel. However, the conceptual and methodological framework for understanding the role of multiple environmental exposures in travel environments is still in an early phase, and the health and wellbeing impacts at individual or population level are not well known. Further research with greater geographical balance is needed to fill the gaps in the empirical evidence, and linking environmental exposures during travel with the causal health and wellbeing outcomes. These advancements can enable evidence-based urban and transport planning to take the next step in advancing urban livability.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) remains one of the countries most impacted by malaria despite decades of control efforts, including multiple mass insecticide treated net (ITN) distribution campaigns. The multi-scalar and complex nature of malaria necessitates an understanding of malaria risk factors over time and at multiple levels (e.g., individual, household, community). Surveillance of households in both rural and urban settings over time, coupled with detailed behavioral and geographic data, enables the detection of seasonal trends in malaria prevalence and malaria-associated behaviors as well as the assessment of how the local environments within and surrounding an individual's household impact malaria outcomes.

Participants from seven sites in Kinshasa Province, DRC were followed for over two years. Demographic, behavioral, and spatial information was gathered from enrolled households. Malaria was assessed using both rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sea neighborhood-focused interventions may be effective strategies for improving malaria outcomes in high-burden countries like the DRC.

This region is of great anthropologic and forensic interest but relationships of large numbers of populations within the region have not been able to be cleanly resolved with autosomal genetic markers. To examine the genetic boundaries to the SWAMSE region and whether internal structure can be detected we have assembled data for a total of 151 separate autosomal genetic markers on populations in this region and other parts of the world for a global set of 95 populations. The markers include 83 ancestry informative SNPs as singletons and 68 microhaplotype loci defined by 204 SNPs. The 151 loci are ancestry informative on a global scale, identifying at least five biogeographic clusters. One of those clusters is a clear grouping of 37 populations containing the SWAMS that rank highest by Rosenberg's In measure for the SWAMSE region populations and for the global set of populations analyzed. DATA AVAILABILITY Genotypes on all 151 markers for all 3790 individuals typed in the Kidd Lab on the 72 Kidd lab populations have been deposited in the Zenodo archive and can be freely accessed at https//doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4658892. Some of the data has been made public previously as supplemental files appended to publications. Data for the additional individuals included in the analyses was taken from already public datasets as indicated in the text.Syndecans (SDCs) are a family of four members of integral membrane proteins, which play important roles in cell-cell interactions. Dimerization/oligomerization generated by transmembrane domains (TMDs) appears to crucially regulate several functional behaviors of all syndecan members. The different levels of protein-protein interactions mediated by Syndecan TMDs may lead to a rather complicated function of Syndecans. The molecular mechanism of the different dimerization tendencies in each type of SDCs remains unclear. Here, the self-assembly process of syndecan TMD homodimers and heterodimers was studied in molecular details by molecular dynamics simulations. Our computational results showed that the SDC2 forms the most stable homodimer, which is consistent with previous experimental results. Detailed analysis suggests that instead of the conserved dimerizing motif G8XXXG12 in all four SDCs involved in homo- and hetero-dimerization of SDCs. The different locations of GXXXA motif affect the stability of SDC dimers. In addition, we found that A3XXXA7 can stabilize the dimerization, making the dimer of SDC2 the most stable among these SDC dimers. Our results shed light on the complex effect of multiple dimerizing motifs on the dimerization of transmembrane domains.
Concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been associated with an increased type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk. It remains unclear whether POPs are also associated with the risk of diabetes complications including neuropathy and evidence on this topic is scarce. We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that low-dose background concentrations of POPs were positively associated with distal sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN).

This cross-sectional study was based on data from the second follow-up (FF4, 2013-2014, N=2279) of the population-based KORA S4 study (Augsburg, Germany). The study sample consisted of 200 participants, including four groups of 50 persons each with known T2D, prediabetes, newly diagnosed diabetes, and normal glucose tolerance (NGT) based on an oral glucose tolerance test. We analyzed the association of six most abundant serum concentrations of POPs, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as well as organochlorine (OC) pesticides, with DSPN by multivariable logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, glycaemic status, body mass index, physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption.
