Results The main causes of deaths during the follow-up period from 2002 to 2013 were 460 for neoplasm, 254 for cardiovascular, and 435 for other causes. After adjusting for potential confounders, we found a significant positive association between the trait anger score and the risk of cardiovascular mortality for women, with a hazard ratio for high versus low score of trait anger of 1.81 (95% confidence interval 0.91-3.63, p for trend = 0.04), but not for men. Conclusions Data suggest that for Japanese women, high trait anger score may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Potential gender differences in the association between trait anger and mortality should be further studied from the cultural context.A series of dried blood spot (DBS) detection methods for doping agents have been developed in the last two decades. Methods Freshly expressed milk was obtained from mothers in the NICU, stored at -20°C for 6 months, and compared with the baseline. Paired samples were analyzed for glutathione, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), 8-isoprostane, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. Results There was no change in H2O2 concentration between baseline and 6 months. Significant reductions from baseline in both catalase and superoxide dismutase concentrations and activities, total glutathione, oxidized glutathione, reduced glutathione, and the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione were observed (p  less then  0.05). There was a significant increase in 8-isoprostane concentrations (p  less then  0.001). Conclusion These data indicate significant changes in antioxidant capacity of human milk, including oxidation of macromolecules, after storage at -20°C for 6 months. The clinical implication of these findings may explain the nonuniform protection against oxidant disease in preterm infants fed human milk.Background Lactation is a normal postpartum physiological process that can continue in excess of 3 years and is often the sole nutritional source for infants in the first 6 months of life.
