Dementor digambarkan setinggi manusia, tanpa mata, bertampang mengerikan, berkerudung, dan yang terlihat hanya tangannya yang hijau menyeramkan.

Yang dimaksud kosong disini adalah orang itu tetap hidup, tapi keadaan pikiran mereka bahkan lebih buruk dari orang mati. Maka dari itu banyak tawanan azkaban yang menjadi 'gila' dan bahkan bunuh diri. Dementor pun mulai ditarik dari azkaban karenanya
