Purpose Simulated competition as a training tool has a relevant role in enhancement of exercise intensity, motivation and physical enjoyment. Including a competitive component into the agility training could represent another way to improve agility performance significantly more. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of agility training performed in the form of competitive exercising on agility performance. Methods Twenty-two athletes were randomly assigned to an experimental or a control group. Both groups completed the same eight-week agility training, but only the experimental group performed exercises in the form of head-to-head competition. Prior to and after the training, agility time in the Agility Dual test (performed in pairs in the form of head-to-head competition) and Agility Single test (performed individually) was measured. In addition, simple and two-choice reaction time and speed of step initiation were also assessed. Results A significant group × time interaction effect was observed for agility time in the Agility Dual test only (p = .002). This effect occurred in favor of experimental group (18%, p less then .01). No further significant interactions were detected. Conclusions Competitive agility training led to significant improvement of agility time under competitive conditions only. This training does not contribute to more pronounced improvements of other reaction and speed abilities.Purpose In recent years a sub-group of minimalist runners have emerged who aim to perform physical exercise more naturally in an attempt to reduce running-related injuries. Here we aimed to determine the effect that running with minimalist footwear in a prolonged run has on foot-impact accelerations. Method Seventeen runners ran with minimalist and conventional shoes (MS and CS, respectively) in two separate sessions; the participants had experience with both footwear types. We measured the length and frequency of each stride, as well as the tibial and head impact acceleration every 5 minutes during a prolonged run (30 minutes at 80% of each individual's maximum aerobic speed). Results There were significant differences in the acceleration rate in the tibia (CS 516.1 ± 238.47 G/s and MS 786.6 ± 238.45 G/s; p = .009) and head (CS 73.3 ± 23.65 G/s and MS 120.7 ± 44.13 G/s; p = .000). Our data indicate that the type of footwear increased the stride frequency and decreased length and that the impact acceleration is increased with MS compared to CS (p less then .05 in both cases). However, the effect of prolonged run was not significantly different between CS and MS (p less then .05). Conclusions The peak tibia acceleration and headtibia acceleration rate indicate that the use of MS may be related to a higher risk of injury. These differences remained independently of the runners' fatigue state. The functions and molecular mechanism of circRNAs in the development of radiation-induced liver disease (RILD) remain largely unknown. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/gdc-0068.html The goal of this study was to explore the expression and potential role of a new circular RNA, named circTUBD1, in irradiated and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human hepatic stellate cell (HSC) line LX-2 cells. The expression of circTUBD1 was significantly upregulated in irradiated and LPS-stimulated LX-2 cells compared to non-treated LX-2 cells. To explore the functions of circTUBD1, small interfering RNAs targeting circTUBD1 were designed. Silencing circTUBD1 inhibited proliferation, promoted apoptosis of LX-2 cells, and significantly decreased the expression level of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in irradiated and LPS-stimulated LX-2 cells. Mechanistic analysis suggested that circTUBD1 acted as the miR-146a-5p sponge to affect pro-inflammatory cytokine production through regulating expression of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), interleukin receptor-associated kinase 1 (IRAK1), tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor-6 (TRAF6), and phosphorylation of nuclear factor-kappa B (pNF-κB) in irradiated and LPS-stimulated LX-2 cells. To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that circTUBD1 acts as a miR-146a-5p sponge to affect the viability and pro-inflammatory cytokine production of LX-2 cells through the TLR4 pathway, suggesting that circTUBD1 is a potential target for RILD therapy.A standard Fricke dosimeter was used to measure the absorbed dose via the oxidation yields of Fe3+ ions in an aqueous environment induced by soft X rays within the "water window" spectral range. We also exploited the property of a neutral solution containing terephthalic acid as a tool for selective detection of OH radicals. Both dosimetric systems were irradiated using the experimental pulsed laser-plasma soft X-ray source as well as conventional 1.25-MeV gamma rays. Radiation chemical yields of Fe3+ ions and OH radicals were determined to be (5.13 ± 0.94) × 10-1 μmol·J-1 (4.95 ± 0.91 100eV-1) and (2.33 ± 0.35) × 10-2 μmol·J-1 (0.23 ± 0.03 100eV-1), respectively. Measurements were supported by Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the linear energy transfer of the water window radiation. The simulation results are in good agreement with expected linear energy transfer of ions inducing the same Fe3+ ion and OH radical radiation chemical yield.Purpose To compare the effect of 12-weeks of cycling training and competition versus recreational cycling on successful aging across physical, psychological, cognitive, and social functioning domains in mid-aged adults. Methods Recreational cyclists were randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 13, M age = 47.18 years) and comparison (n = 13, M age = 46.91 years) group. Analysis of Covariance was used on self-reported pre-post data to determine changes across time and differences between groups on outcomes. Results The intervention group scored higher on the role limitation due to physical problems measure of physical functioning (p = .045) and the social activity measure of social functioning (p = .008) with large effect sizes (ηp2 > .14). The remaining physical, psychological, cognitive, and social functioning measures were not significantly different (p > .05) between groups with small to medium effect sizes (ηp2 > .01 to ≤ .06). Conclusion Cycling training and competition promotes better physical and social functioning than recreational cycling.
