The model estimated national upland ETSP values ranging from ~0 to 100 mg P kg-1 with an areal-weighted average of 60.6 mg P kg-1 and 15% of national upland soils having ETSP values less then 30 mg P kg-1. Upland soil P contents in Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces largely exceeded their corresponding ETSP values by 1-22 mg P kg-1, indicating high P loss risks. This study aims to identify the effects of hydrology and microtopography on the structure and function of a wetland plant community. A field survey was conducted in Carex schmidtii tussock wetland. Vegetation was sampled in different microtopographic regions (hummock and interspaces) in three types of tussock wetlands with different hydrological conditions (i.e., droughty, seasonally flooded and long-term flooded). Relative importance value (RIV), species richness, diversity, dominance, as well as community similarity and productivity were calculated. We recorded a total of 52 species of plants, belonging to 21 families and 39 genera, in sample plots. Community ecological characteristics significantly differed under varying hydrological conditions and microtopographic regions. Drought decreased the dominance of the C. schmidtii community but the plant community. Attention should be paid to the protection and maintenance of hummock structure and the dominance of C. schmidtii communities in tussock wetland conservation and management.Microplastics are ubiquitous in most biomes and environments, representing one of the most pressing global environmental challenges. This study investigated the ability of pre-production microplastic pellets to accumulate metals from the marine environment. An accidental ocean discharge of poly(propylene) pellets occurred via a wastewater treatment centre at the coastal city of Warrnambool, Victoria - Australia. These pellets were collected routinely from Shelly Beach, adjacent to the ocean discharge site over a period of 16-months following the spill. This collection formed a unique time-series that accurately represented the degree to which metal ions in the coastal marine environment accumulate on plastic debris. Elemental analysis indicated an increase in concentration over time of rare earth elements and a selection of other metals supporting the hypothesis that microplastics selectively adsorb metals from the environment. A subset of the poly(propylene) pellets contained a surfactant coating which significantly increased the adsorption capacity. The surface properties in relation to adsorption were further explored with surface imaging and these results are also discussed. This study shows how microplastics act as nucleation points and carriers of trace metal ions in marine environments.With the steady growth in the worldwide solar installed capacity, there is an immediate concern about the fate of the solar panels at the end of their life. Solar panel waste is often disposed of indiscriminately, exposing the environment to chemical hazards. The major objective of the current study was to evaluate the leaching potential of the polycrystalline solar panel waste under different simulated disposal conditions through toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP), synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) and pH static leaching procedure tests. Moreover, the study evaluates the effects of ageing and the breakage of the Glass Laminate Encapsulation (GLE) of solar panels on their leaching potential. Among the metals studied (silver (Ag), aluminium (Al), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)), the concentrations of Pb were as high as 9.3 mg/L, 1.4 mg/L, 6.7 mg/L in the TCLP, SPLP, and pH static test respectively. This indicated the hazardous nature of the waste with leaching potential of Pb above the permissible limits stipulated by various regulatory bodies. The presence of GLE reduced the mobility of Pb by a factor of 4.1-8.8 in the TCLP test, thereby rendering the waste as non-hazardous for its disposal in a landfill. However, the indiscriminate disposal of solar panel waste in the natural environment as simulated by the SPLP test indicated its harmful nature irrespective of the physical condition. Ageing of the solar panels before disposal and acidic pH conditions also positively influenced the leaching potential of the selected metals subjected to their reactivity and the accessibility of internal layers of waste to the leaching solution. Strategies such as extended producer responsibilty, advance-recycling fee, and incentivizing the recycling industry will lead to both economic benefit creation and effective waste management of this waste stream.Typical diffuse pollutants such as phosphorus (P) have long been a hot topic in the surface-water research field. As the fifth-largest river in the world, the Yellow River Basin (YRB) suffers from significant soil erosion and relatively high intensity of agricultural activities, which bring large amounts of P loads. However, owing to the large drainage area, few studies have investigated the transport and attenuation dynamic processes or provided a precise calculation of the total phosphorus (TP) load for the entire YRB. In this study, the SPAtially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes (SPARROW) model was used to simulate and investigate the spatial variation and transport mechanism of P in the YRB. The YRB was divided into 60 sub-basins, and the data of drainage area, spatial attribute, streamflow, and monitored flux were integrated into the model correspondingly. Calculated R2 values confirm that 84% of the spatial variability in annual TP loads can represent regional processes.
