Tanzimat Dönemi 1876’da II. Abdülhamit’in tahta çıkması ve Meşrutiyet ‘in ilanıyla sona ermiş kabul edilir. Ancak genel anlamda Tanzimat Döneminin 1922’ de Osmanlı Devletinin yıkılmasına dek sürdüğü de söylenebilir. Tanzimat çağının önde gelen siyasi liderleri 1839-1855 döneminde Mustafa Reşit Paşa, 1850’lerin başından 1871’e kadar da Ali Paşa ve Keçecizade Fuat Paşa’dır. Fuat Paşa’nın 1868’de, Ali Paşa’nın 1871’de ölümünden sonra reform süreci krize girmiş ve uzun süren bir siyasi istikrarsızlık dönemi yaşanmıştır.
