Furthermore, interaction effects between age groups and ageism varied across gender. The negative perception of aging was more strongly associated with less internet use in older women than middle-aged women. In comparison, the perceived age discrimination predicted less internet use in middle-aged men than older men. Discussion and implications Our findings suggest that perceived ageism is significantly associated with internet use, and its association differs by gender. Background and objectives Family caregivers often have other family members helping to provide care. The purpose of our study was to examine relationships between care coordination quality among family members and the following caregiver outcomes caregiver mental health (depressive symptoms, anxiety), social activity restrictions, and caregiver burden. Research design and methods Secondary analysis was conducted using data from the 2017 Pittsburgh Regional Caregivers' Survey. Six hundred and fifty-five caregivers who had other family members helping with care reported discordance in care coordination, depressive symptoms, anxiety, social activity restrictions, caregiving burden, and covariates such as demographics and known risk factors for negative caregiver outcomes. We used multiple logistic regression and negative bi-nominal expansion models in the analysis. Results Discordant care coordination was associated with higher levels of caregiver depressive symptoms (p less then .001), anxiety(p less then .01), social activity restriction (p less then .001), and caregiver burden (p less then .001) after controlling for known risk factors. Discussion and implications We found that lower quality of family care coordination was associated with negative caregiver outcomes. Future research should further investigate the dynamics of family care coordination and impacts on both caregivers and care recipients. The results suggest that caregiver interventions attempting to understand and decrease care coordination discord should be a priority.Egg and Banana sign is a novel radiological sign of severe pulmonary arterial hypertension. This sign occurs due to significant increase in pulmonary artery pressures causing increase in size of pulmonary artery and its appearance at the level of aortic arch. Egg and banana sign when used in combination with other clinical and radiological signs, it improves sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Here we report a case of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension in a young male with severe PAH causing Egg and Banana sign on axial computed tomography of chest.Inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a recognized environment-related factor for bladder cancer (BCa). Arsenic (+3 oxidation state) methyltransferase (AS3MT) gene might influence BCa by regulating iAs metabolism. The aim of the present study was to explore whether AS3MT polymorphisms could affect BCa susceptibility. We systematically reviewed eligible case-control studies about AS3MT polymorphisms and BCa and to further compare the genotype distribution and allele distribution between BCa patients and controls by meta-analysis for humans. Besides, to clarify the effects of AS3MT expression on BCa clinical outcomes and survival time, we also conducted a series of analyses based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset. Databases were systematically retrieved and we applied Stata software to perform meta-analysis. The registration of this study protocol is at PROSPERO and ID is CRD42019133947. Five articles were recruited and pooled results demonstrated that rs3740393 and rs11191438 polymorphisms were related to BCa risk in overall population (P less then 0.05) in the overall population. In addition, GG and GC genotypes in rs3740393 and GG genotype in rs11191438 might be the susceptibility genotypes for BCa. Results based on 168 BCa samples from TGCA indicated that patients with higher expression of AS3MT had poor overall survival time and AS3MT expression is an independent indicator for BCa survival. This study identified that AS3MT polymorphisms could affect BCa risk and AS3MT expression was pivotal in prognosis of BCa. As sessile cells of fungal biofilms are at least 500-fold more resistant to antifungal drugs than their planktonic counterparts, there is a requirement for new antifungal agents. Olygostyrylbenzenes (OSBs) are the first generation of poly(phenylene)vinylene dendrimers with a gram-positive antibacterial activity. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the antifungal activity of four OSBs (1, 2, 3, and 4) on planktonic cells and biofilms of Candida tropicalis. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the planktonic population and the sessile minimum inhibitory concentrations (SMIC) were determined. Biofilm eradication was studied by crystal violet stain and light microscopy (LM), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was also utilized in conjunction with the image analysis software COMSTAT. Although all the OSBs studied had antifungal activity, the cationic OSBs were more effective than the anionic ones. A significant reduction of biofilms was observed at MIC and supraMIC50 (50 times higher than MIC) for compound 2, and at supraMIC50 with compound 3. Alterations in surface topography and the three-dimensional architecture of the biofilms were evident with LM and CLSM. The LM analysis revealed that the C. tropicalis strain produced a striking biofilm with oval blastospores, pseudohyphae, and true hyphae. CLSM images showed that a decrease occurred in the thickness of the mature biofilms treated with the OSBs at the most effective concentration for each one. The results obtained by microscopy were supported by those of the COMSTAT program. learn more Our results revealed an antibiofilm activity, with compound 2 being a potential candidate for the treatment of C. tropicalis infections. Lay summary This study aimed to investigate the antifungal activity of four OSBs (1, 2, 3, and 4) on planktonic cells and biofilms of Candida tropicalis. Our results revealed an antibiofilm activity, with compound 2 being a potential candidate for the treatment of C. tropicalis infections.
