These findings are used to elucidate the conversion pathway of sulphides in HSAD. Criteria continuous concentrations (CCCs) are the scientific basis for making sound environmental management decisions and assessing surface water quality. Transition metals are a group of elements, similar in physicochemical properties perpendicularly and horizontally across the Periodic Table, some of which are widely distributed in aquatic environments and can cause adverse effects on aquatic life and human health. Currently internationally recommended CCCs are available for only seven transition metals. It is challenging to derive CCCs for transition metals based on scarce empirical information. The present study found significant relationships between the suggested CCCs of transition metals and their nine physicochemical properties and an empirical model was developed to satisfactorily predict the CCCs of 56 transition metals by use of the most relevant parameter, r, for protecting aquatic ecosystems. Predicted values were largely consistent with the CCCs and CMCs predicted previously and over 80% predicted CMCs of transition metals are greater than or equal to their CCCs. The present study shows methodological advantages in obtaining CCCs, and provides reliable reference values for setting chronic WQC and assessing risk of transition metals. this website The wide range of applications of rare earth elements (REE) is leading to their occurrence in worldwide aquatic environments. Among the most popular REE is Neodymium (Nd), being widely used in permanent magnets, lasers, and glass additives. Neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets is the main application of Nd since they are used in electric motors, hard disk drives, speakers and generators for wind turbines. Recent studies have already evaluated the toxic potential of different REE, but no information is available on the effects of Nd towards marine bivalves. Thus, the present study evaluated the biochemical alterations caused by Nd in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to this element for 28 days. The results obtained clearly demonstrated that Nd was accumulated by mussels, leading to mussel's metabolic capacity increase and GLY expenditure, in an attempt to fuel up defense mechanisms. Antioxidant and biotransformation defenses were insufficient in the elimination of ROS excess, resulting from the presence of Nd and increased electron transport system activity, which caused cellular damages (measured by lipid peroxidation) and loss of redox balance (assessed by the ratio between reduced and oxidized glutathione). The results obtained clearly highlight the potential toxicity of REEs and, in particular of Nd, with impacts at cellular level, which may have consequences in mussel's survival, growth and reproduction, affecting mussel's population. Uranium is a long lived radioactive element which is naturally present in minute concentrations in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. These rocks when subjected to weathering results in the formation of soil which also has traces of uranium. Distribution coefficient (Kd) is a crucial parameter in environmental assessment which is used to predict the interaction and transport of uranium in groundwater. The objective of the study is to estimate the Kd of uranium in soils and to develop a relation between this and the soil parameters. Seven rock samples and twenty three soil samples were collected during this study. The Kd of rock samples of different grain sizes where determined and the soil samples were analysed for electrical conductivity, pH, grain size, bulk density, particle density, porosity, calcium carbonate, cation exchange capacity and Kd. The Kd of the soil increases with increase in soil pH up to 6, after which it gradually decreases. Multiple regression analysis was performed to quantify the effect of various soil parameters on soil Kd and equations were statistically significant. Thus, soil Kd in a region could be predicted using limited soil properties with such statistically significant equations. Polysulfone ultrafiltration (UF) and polypiperazine-amide nanofiltration (NF) membranes were first fabricated by phase inversion and interfacial polymerization, and then modified by the commonly used TiO2 on the membrane surface, respectively. Compared with the pristine UF and NF membranes, pure water flux decreased by 40.66% for modified UF membrane and 12.92% for modified NF membrane, while the contact angle of the modified membranes decreased from 66.5° to 35.3° for UF membrane and from 48.2° to37.7° for NF membrane. However, the membrane modified by TiO2 nanoparticles for both UF and NF membranes exhibited much better anti-fouling and separation performance for two types of oil-in-water emulsions with different droplet size (i.e., prepared oil-in-water emulsion with low salinity and oil produced water in Shengli oilfield, China). It was obvious that water flux of modified UF only slightly decreased and the stable water flux was 2.2 times and 15.6% higher than that of pristine membranes for the prepared oil-in-water emulsion and produced water, respectively. According to the five fouling models for UF, the TiO2 modified UF membrane could alleviate the fouling on membrane surface and greatly increase water flux by reducing the adsorption, deposition, blockage of membrane pores and formation of cake layer for two types of oil-in-water emulsion. For NF, water flux of the modified membrane increased by 66.1% and 22.8% for prepared oil-in-water emulsion and produced water, respectively. TiO2 coating effectively alleviated the oil adhesion and cake layer formation on the membrane surface. Although epidemiological studies demonstrate that persistent organic pollutants (POPs) could lead to metabolic syndrome, the mechanism has remained unclear. The dysbiosis of gut microbiota and the lipid metabolome have been put forward in the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome. In this study, we used dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) as an example to study the effects of POP-impaired microbial composition and metabolome homeostasis on metabolic syndrome. The results showed that DDE exposure increased body weight and fat content and impaired glucose homeostasis. Further investigation revealed that DDE induced gut dysbiosis as indicated by an increased Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio, which may impact energy harvest efficiency. Meanwhile, the plasma lipid metabolome profile was significantly altered by DDE. Furthermore, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and triacylglycerol were identified as key metabolites affected by DDE treatment, and these altered lipid metabolites were highly correlated with changed microbiota composition.
