World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a specific amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. This is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to the variety of perks that have to be altered to upgrade an item.
Item level is a popular measure of power, and can be seen on all tooltips of items. It can also be used to limit how much PvP gear players can use as PvP is restricted at lower levels. Players can see their average level of items on their character sheet.
When deciding whether to purchase or sell gear, players can compare the item level. It's a measure of the item's damage and quality. Comparing items from the inventory of a vendor can be done using the level of the item.
On PC, you can view the item level by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then entering /itemlevel into chat.
There are a few theories on how the calculation of the item's level is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that determines how much an item's stats are worth. It considers that different perks are valued differently, and that gems found in sockets increase the item's value. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's level, which is usually close to the actual Blizzard level of the item.
It's not the only factor that influences the value of an item. The location of where the item was dropped may change its stats. For instance it can add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
Item stats are a big part of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the best." The base stats on a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn increased by the player's skill.
The upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. An item that is white or grey for instance, will only be upgraded once however, items with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times at higher prices.
Another method to alter the stats on an item is through affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Affixes can provide the item extra damage, or give a specific ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or cutting down the duration of cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding an additional name to the item.
All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade menu and pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount in gold and items. These can be used as upgrade gauges similar to other methods of rerolling.
In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can also choose which of the available stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However, enhance gear will include at least one stat in that range unless they are an item that is unique or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll attaches, or select which stats to enhance. But as with base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis and the interface for item comparison will not show all the stats that could be gained or lost at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items and the properties that are created by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the possibility to obtain better gear in earlier waves and is thus more beneficial in early game runs than later ones as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith’s overall upgrade chances that increase with each level of the item. These can also be increased by using anti-materials, such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to increase the value of 40 luck, or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.
Moreover some items, such as the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items are available in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their chance of success or stop them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.
When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased as high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.
The performance of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of that item. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects can be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
