Forensic expertise, including dental identification, mostly relies on dental records. We explored the practice of maintaining dental records among Croatian dentists, as well as their knowledge of legal regulations and the application of dental records in forensic odontology. In all, 145 dentists participated in an online survey. Questions covered general information on dentists, maintenance of dental records, and knowledge of legal requirements and forensic odontology. Overall, 70% of dentists obtain and archive written informed consents, while 87% record dental status. Generally, non-carious dental lesions and developmental dental anomalies were not recorded. About 72% of dentists record filling material and surfaces. Only 32% of dentists know the legal requirements for keeping records, whereas 21% have no knowledge of forensic odontology and its purpose. The survey revealed different practices in the maintenance of dental records, including significant flaws and lack of awareness of its forensic importance. This obvious need for additional education on proper maintenance of dental records could be met by including forensic odontology in compulsory undergraduate courses and postgraduate dental education. Establishing national and international standards in dental charting would comply with contemporary trends in health care and the requirements of forensic expertise.The aim of the present work is to provide a methodology to evaluate the influence of stacking sequence on the ballistic performance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) protections. The proposed methodology is based on the combination of experimental tests, numerical modelling, and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). High-velocity impact experimental tests were conducted to validate the numerical model. The validated Finite Element Method (FEM) model was used to provide data to train and to validate the ANN. Finally, the ANN was used to find the best stacking sequence combining layers of three UHMWPE materials with different qualities. The results showed that the three UHMWPE materials can be properly combined to provide a solution with a better ballistic performance than using only the material with highest quality. These results imply that costs can be reduced increasing the ballistic limit of the UHMWPE protections. When the weight ratios of the three materials remain constant, the optimal results occur when the highest-performance material is placed in the back face. Furthermore, ANN simulation showed that the optimal results occur when the weight ratio of the highest-performance material is 79.2%.The aim of the study was to evaluate 11 cultivars of blue honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea L.) for bioactive compounds, antioxidant capacity, and the antibacterial activity of berries. Total phenolic contents (TPCs) and total anthocyanin contents (TACs) were established by using ethanolic extracts. For contents of organic acids and saccharides, aqueous extracts were used, and vitamin C was determined by using oxalic acid solution. DPPH• radical scavenging capacity was evaluated by using ethanolic extracts; antibacterial activity was assessed by using both ethanolic and aqueous extracts. The TPC varied from 364.02 ± 0.41 mg/100 g in 'Vostorg' to 784.5 ± 0.3 mg/100 g in 'Obilnaja', and TAC ranged from 277.8 ± 1.1 mg/100 g in 'Čelnočnaja' to 394.1 ± 8.4 mg/100 g in 'Nimfa'. Anthocyanins comprised 53.8% of total phenolic contents on average. Among organic acids, citric acid was predominant, averaging 769.41 ± 5.34 mg/100 g, with malic and quinic acids amounting to 289.90 ± 2.64 and 45.00 ± 0.37 mg/100 g on average, respectively. Contents of vitamin C were 34.26 ± 0.25 mg/100 g on average. Organic acids were most effective in the inhibition of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria tested. In conclusion, berries of L. caerulea are beneficial not only for fresh consumption, but also as a raw material or ingredients of foods with high health-promoting value.Breast cancer is the most common female cancer. About 70% of breast cancer patients are estrogen receptor α (ERα) positive (ER+) with tamoxifen being the most commonly used anti-endocrine therapy. However, up to 50% of patients who receive tamoxifen suffer recurrence. We previously identified BQ323636.1 (BQ), a novel splice variant of NCOR2, can robustly predict tamoxifen resistance in ER+ primary breast cancer. Here we show that BQ can enhance IL-6/STAT3 signalling. We demonstrated that through interfering with NCOR2 suppressive activity, BQ favours the binding of ER to IL-6 promoter and the binding of NF-ĸB to IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) promoter, leading to the up-regulation of both IL-6 and IL-6R and thus the activation of STAT3. Knockdown of IL-6R could compromise tamoxifen resistance mediated by BQ. Furthermore, Tocilizumab (TCZ), an antibody that binds to IL-6R, could effectively reverse tamoxifen resistance both in vitro and in vivo. Analysis of clinical breast cancer samples confirmed that IL-6R expression was significantly associated with BQ expression and tamoxifen resistance in primary breast cancer, with high IL-6R expression correlating with poorer survival. Multivariate Cox-regression analysis confirmed that high IL-6R expression remained significantly associated with poor overall as well as disease-specific survival in ER+ breast cancer.In the context of aridification in Mediterranean regions, desiccation resistance and physiological plasticity will be key traits for the persistence of aquatic insects exposed to increasing desiccation stress. Control of cuticular transpiration through changes in the quantity and composition of epicuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) is one of the main mechanisms of desiccation resistance in insects, but it remains largely unexplored in aquatic ones. We studied acclimation responses to desiccation in adults of two endemic water beetles from distant lineages living in Mediterranean intermittent saline streams Enochrus jesusarribasi (Hydrophilidae) and Nebrioporus baeticus (Dytiscidae). Cuticular water loss and CHC composition were measured in specimens exposed to a prior non-lethal desiccation stress, allowed to recover and exposed to a subsequent desiccation treatment. E. jesusarribasi showed a beneficial acclimation response to desiccation pre-desiccated individuals reduced cuticular water loss rate in a subsequent exposure by increasing the relative abundance of cuticular methyl-branched compounds, longer chain alkanes and branched alkanes.
