The cumulative effect of MT, DT and heat events lagged over 14 days was particularly high for respiratory mortality in all locations except in Jämtland, though these did not show a clear effect on cardiovascular mortality. This study provides valuable information about the relationship between hot oppressive weather types with cause-specific mortality; however, the cold weather types may not capture sufficiently effects on cause-specific mortality in this sub-Arctic region.Dengue is one of the most serious vector-borne infectious diseases in India, particularly in Kolkata and its neighbouring districts. Dengue viruses have infected several citizens of Kolkata since 2012 and it is amplifying every year. It has been derived from earlier studies that certain meteorological variables and climate change play a significant role in the spread and amplification of dengue infections in different parts of the globe. In this study, our primary objective is to identify the relative contribution of the putative drivers responsible for dengue occurrences in Kolkata and project dengue incidences with respect to the future climate change. The regression model was developed using maximum temperature, minimum temperature, relative humidity and rainfall as key meteorological factors on the basis of statistically significant cross-correlation coefficient values to predict dengue cases. Finally, climate variables from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) for South Asia region were input into the statistical model to project the occurrences of dengue infections under different climate scenarios such as Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). It has been estimated that from 2020 to 2100, dengue cases will be higher from September to November with more cases in RCP8.5 (872 cases per year) than RCP4.5 (531 cases per year). The present research further concludes that from December to February, RCP8.5 leads to suitable warmer weather conditions essential for the survival and multiplication of dengue pathogens resulting more than two times dengue cases in RCP8.5 than in RCP4.5. Furthermore, the results obtained will be useful in developing early warning systems and provide important evidence for dengue control policy-making and public health intervention.The study investigated the ability of transdermal electric stimulation to prevent the formation of intra-abdominal adhesions in the combination with Seprafilm® (anti-adhesive agent). One hundred and twenty-eight (128) rabbits were subjected to a surgical procedure to simulate the adhesion processes. After the simulation, the animals were divided into 4 groups (32 animals each), depending on the application of the methods of prevention (1) control group (no anti-adhesives or electro-stimulation) (CG); (2) comparison group (applications of Seprafilm®) (SF); (3) comparison group 2 (transdermal electric stimulation of the abdominal muscles) TES; (4) group (transdermal electric stimulation + Seprafilm®) (TES + SF). We observed that the application of the Seprafilm® alone led to a significant decrease in the adhesive process compared to the control group (CG) (p less then 0.01). The adhesion process in the group underwent transdermal electrical stimulation (TES) was significantly lower compared to the Seprafilm® group (SF) (p ≤ 0.05). The results demonstrated a significant decrease in the adhesion processes in the SF + TES group on days 1, 3, 7 and 14 in comparison with the CG group (p = 0.001), SF group (p = 0.001) and TES group (p = 0.01) group of animals. This study showed the efficacy of transdermal electrical muscle stimulation for the prevention of intra-abdominal adhesions. Moreover, the combination of Seprafilm® anti-adhesion agent and electrical muscle stimulation resulted in the complete absence of adhesions. Our findings indicate the potential of such strategy for further clinical application.BACKGROUND Previous studies indicate a low incidence of appendicitis in third-trimester pregnancy, suggesting a protecting effect of pregnancy. This large population-based cohort study analyzes the association of appendicitis with pregnancy in more detail. The aim of the study was to investigate the incidence of appendicitis and negative appendectomy before, during and after pregnancy. METHODS Cross-linking between two Swedish health registries provided data on appendectomy for all women in Sweden giving birth between 1973 and 2013. We analyzed the incidence rates (IR) of perforated and non-perforated appendicitis and negative appendectomy before, during and after pregnancy, and secular trends during the study period. Standardized incidence ratios (SIR) were estimated using age-, sex- and period-specific IR from the background population in Sweden. RESULTS Some 3,888,452 pregnancies resulted in birth during the study period. An appendectomy was registered for 27,575 women in the interval starting one year before and ending two years after pregnancy. The incidence of appendicitis varied substantially during and after pregnancy. SIR for perforated appendicitis was 0.47 (95% CI 0.38-0.59) in the third trimester, 3.89 (2.92-5.18) peripartum, 2.20 (1.89-2.55) in the puerperium and 1.27 (1.19-1.36) in the year postpartum. The pattern was similar for non-perforated appendicitis. Negative appendectomy decreased postpartum. Incidence rate of non-perforated appendicitis and negative appendectomy decreased for both pregnant and non-pregnant women during the study period. CONCLUSIONS The findings in this study suggest a protecting effect of pregnancy on the development of appendicitis, which is followed by a rebound effect after birth.BACKGROUND Although bullectomy is the most curative treatment in primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP), postoperative recurrence is not uncommon. New bulla formation at the staple line is the most common cause of recurrence. However, the mechanism is not known. We believe that the pressure gradient plays the main role in new bulla formation. A large resection amount induces a prolonged pressure gradient for obliteration of the residual space. This study aimed to identify the association between resected lung volume and recurrence. METHODS The medical records of patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) bullectomy were reviewed between October 2010 and December 2017. A total of 396 patients underwent surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax. The electronic medical records (EMRs) of the patients were reviewed. Patients with secondary spontaneous pneumothorax were excluded. Patients who were diagnosed with emphysema on CT were excluded. Patients with PSP were excluded from the study if the bulla was not located in the apex or if there was no ruptured bulla at the time of the operation.
