However, much still remains unknown about the mechanisms supporting learning in different modalities. In the current study, we directly compared auditory and visual category learning in the same individuals. Thirty participants (22 F; 18-32 years old) completed two unidimensional rule-based category learning tasks in a single day - one with auditory stimuli and another with visual stimuli. We replicated the results in a second experiment with a larger online sample (N = 99, 45 F, 18-35 years old). The categories were identically structured in the two modalities to facilitate comparison. We compared categorization accuracy, decision processes as assessed through drift-diffusion models, and the generalizability of resulting category representation through a generalization test. We found that individuals learned auditory and visual categories to similar extents and that accuracies were highly correlated across the two tasks. Participants had similar evidence accumulation rates in later learning, but early on had slower rates for visual than auditory learning. Participants also demonstrated differences in the decision thresholds across modalities. Participants had more categorical generalizable representations for visual than auditory categories. These results suggest that some modality-general cognitive processes support category learning but also suggest that the modality of the stimuli may also affect category learning behavior and outcomes.The reverse-contingency task is a task in which one is given a choice between two rewards, but one receives the larger amount only if one chooses the smaller amount. This task is very difficult for chimpanzees unless the choice is between symbolic representations of the amounts. We found that pigeons can learn this task easily, if the reward amounts are associated with distinctive colors and the choice is delayed by 5 s. The reverse-contingency task involves three components a loss when choosing one alternative, a gain when choosing the other, and the contrast between what was expected and what occurred. In Experiment 2 we separated the loss from the gain and found that experiencing a loss is sufficient for pigeons to learn to avoid that alternative. Finally, we found evidence for perceived loss aversion. When pigeons were offered a small amount of food and they received that amount, they preferred it over an alternative that offered them a larger amount but gave them only the smaller amount (a perceived loss). The results indicate that loss aversion, based on reference dependence, is likely a general phenomenon, and not only found in humans and other primates. We suggest that it can be attributed to contrast, the difference between what is expected and what is obtained, and it is related to the endowment effect and the mere ownership effect found in humans.
Postoperative dysphagia after anti-reflux surgery typically resolves in a few weeks. However, even after the initial swelling has resolved at 6 weeks, dysphagia can persist in 30% of patients necessitating esophageal dilation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of esophageal dilation on postoperative dysphagia, the recurrence of reflux symptoms, and the efficacy of pneumatic dilations on postoperative dysphagia.

A prospectively collected database was reviewed for patients who underwent partial/complete fundoplication with/without paraesophageal hernia repair between 2006 and 2014. Patient age, sex, BMI, DeMeester score, procedure type, procedure duration, length of stay, postoperative dysphagia, time to first pneumatic dilation, number of dilations, and the need for reoperations were collected.

We assessed the prognostic impact of the ADV score (α-fetoprotein [AFP]-des-γ-carboxyprothrombin [DCP]-tumor volume [TV] score) for predicting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence and patient survival after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).

This study included 843 HCC patients who underwent LDLT between January 2006 and December 2015 at Asan Medical Center. These cases were divided into treatment-naïve (TN, n = 256]) and pretransplant-treated (PT, n = 587 [69.6%]) groups.

There were weak or nearly no correlations among AFP, DCP, and TV. There existed high correlations between the pretransplant and explant findings regarding tumor number, size, and ADV score.
