Personal care products (PCPs) are a group of diverse substances widely used daily for health, beauty, and cleanliness. More than 90% of all PCPs contain the UV-B filter octylmethoxycinnamate (OMC) as a protective function, however, their safety has recently been questioned. The purpose of the present work was to understand how the long-term exposure of UV-filter OMC, used daily by pregnant women, disrupts their vascular homeostasis, altering vascular responses of proteins and channels involved in contractile processes. Stem Cells inhibitor The long-term effects of 24 h of exposure to OMC (1, 10, and 50 μmol/L) were evaluated on contractile responses of human umbilical arteries (HUA) to serotonin and potassium chloride. Since OMC altered vascular homeostasis of arteries, its vascular mode of action was explored in more detail through the analysis of the activity of cGMP and Ca2+-channels, two pathways involved in their relaxation and contraction, respectively. Our findings showed that long-term exposure of UV-filter OMC impaired the main vasorelaxant mechanism of HUA, once OMC altered the vasorelaxant response pattern of sodium nitroprusside and nifedipine. Results also showed that long-term exposure to OMC induced a decreased vasorelaxation response on HUA due to an interference with the NO/sGC/cGMP/PKG pathway. Moreover, OMC seems to modulate the L-type Ca2+ channels, the BKCa 1.1 α-subunit channels, and the PKG. Overall, since OMC compromises the vascular homeostasis of pregnant women it can be an inductor of pregnancy hypertensive disorders.Among the factors affecting the bioaccumulation of As and Cd in rice, a key role is played by the irrigation methods. The sprinkler irrigation (SP), optimized for rice in Sardinia, Italy, applied to several rice genotypes over many years has produced no differences in yields in comparison to what observed using the traditional continuous flooding irrigation method (CF). Because all the previous SP trials have been performed just on one, unpolluted soil, the principal aim of this study is to ascertain the effectiveness of SP to simultaneously minimize the bioaccumulation of As and Cd in rice grain even in soils severely polluted by As and/or Cd. Hence, a Carnise rice genotype was cultivated in an open field in i) an unpolluted soil; ii) a soil polluted with 55 mg kg-1 of As; iii) a soil polluted with 40 mg kg-1 of Cd; iv) a soil polluted with 50 mg kg-1 of As and 50 mg kg-1 of Cd. In the worst condition of pollution, the amounts of total As and Cd measured in the kernels using a fully validated ICP-MS method is 90 ± 10 μg kg-1 and 50 ± 20 μg kg-1, respectively, i.e. less than 50% and the 25% of the maximum concentration set for these elements in rice by the European Community (200 μg kg-1 for the inorganic As and the total amount of Cd, respectively). SP might represent a simple and valuable tool able to produce safe rice also from soils where the traditional irrigation might produce inedible rice only.Consumption of copper and aluminum has increased significantly in recent years; therefore, recycling these elements from the end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) will be of great economic value and social benefit. However, the separation of non-ferrous materials is difficult because of their different sources, various shapes and sizes, and complex surface conditions. In experimental study on the separation of these materials, few non-ferrous metal scraps can be used. To address these limitations, a traditional image recognition model and a small sample multi-target detection model (which can detect multiple targets simultaneously) based on deep learning and transfer learning were used to identify non-ferrous materials. The improved third version of You Only Look Once (YOLOv3) multi-target detection model using data augmentation, the loss function of focal loss, and a method of adjusting the threshold of Intersection over Union (IOU) between candidate bound and ground truth bound has superior target detection performance than methods. We obtained a 95.3% and 91.4% accuracy in identifying aluminum and copper scraps, respectively, and an operation speed of 18 FPS, meeting the real-time requirements of a sorting system. By using the improved YOLOv3 multi-target detection algorithm and equipment operation parameters selected, the accuracy and purity of the separation system exceeded 90%, meeting the needs of actual production.
The main objective of the work is to examine the curvature effects of stenosis/dilatation region pertaining to left coronary artery. The hemodymamic features during the cardiac cycle is thoroughly examined.
A numerical fluid structure interaction model incorporating multi- layered elastic artery wall, non-Newtonian blood viscosity and pulsating boundary conditions is developed. The composite arterial wall consists of a thin layer tunica intima, atheroma and a thick wall. Higher stiffness of atheroma is captured by using higher Young's modulus. The CFD and FSI models are validated with available experimental and analytical data. Computations are done with five different non-Newtonian models and arterial wall with various elasticity levels. The local and time averaged WSS, velocity contours downstream of stenosis, wall pressure and pressure drop during various phases of cardiac cycle are provided in detail.
The influence of non-Newtonian effects of blood viscosity is found to be significant especially at sis. The results from the study may be useful for predicting wall shear stress signatures associated with stenosis/dilatation changes and the management of specific cases.
Colon cancer is a fatal disease, and a comprehensive understanding of the tumor microenvironment (TME) could lead to better risk stratification, prognosis prediction, and therapy management. In this paper, we focused on the automatic evaluation of TME in giga-pixel digital histopathology whole-slide images.
A convolutional neural network is used to recognize nine different content presented in colon cancer whole-slide images. Several implementation details, including the foreground filtering and stain normalization are discussed. Based on the whole-slide segmentation, several TME descriptors are quantified and correlated with the clinical outcome by Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression. Specifically, the stroma, tumor, necrosis, and lymphocyte components are discussed.
We validated the method on colon adenocarcinoma cases from The Cancer Genome Atlas project. The result shows that the stroma is an independent predictor of progression-free interval (PFI) after corrected by age and pathological stage, with a hazard ratio of 1.
