A parallel study was conducted on a group of 12 farmers living and/or working in farms located in an area in the range of 5 km around the incinerator. Results of this study did not evidence any impact of the WTE plant on human exposure to PCDDs, PCDFs, and PCBs. In fact, no significant differences were found in the concentrations of PCDDs + PCDFs, DL-PCBs, and NDL-PCBs measured in the population group residing near the plant after three years of activity (T2) with respect to the control group. A significant decrease of serum concentrations of all the analytes was observed at T2 in both groups compared to T0. Serum concentrations of PCDDs, PCDFs, and PCBs in the group of farmers were higher than those observed in the adult population under study.The underlying mechanisms of biochar enhance high-solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) of food waste were investigated with a focus on the cell viability, microbial community, and methanogenic pathways. This study assessed the effects of different dosages of biochar in HSAD. Optimal biochar dosage was found to be 25 g/L, which produced accumulative methane yields of up to 251 mL CH4/g VS significantly promote volatile fatty acid degradations, especially in butyric acid concentrations. Effects of biochar with a dosage of 25 g/L on the cell viability showed that viable cells based on cell membrane integrity increased from 2.9% to 6.4%. Meanwhile, intact and highly active cells with high DNA content were probably involved in direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) via membrane-bound electron transport proteins. Further analysis demonstrated that Syntrophomonas and methanogens Methanosarcina &Methanocelleus were selectively enriched by biochar, which resulted in the methanogenic pathways shifting from acetoclastic/hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathways to more metabolically diverse methanogenic pathways. Accordingly, biochar-mediated DIET was possibly established between Syntrophomonas and Methanosarcina species due to those viable cells. In conclusion, biochar is a feasible additive in enhancing HSAD methanogenic performance.Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one kind of the most lethal malignancies worldwide, owing to its insidious symptoms, early metastases, and negative responses to current therapies. With an increasing understanding of pathology, the tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a significant role in ineffective treatment and poor prognosis of PC. Thus, a growing number of studies have focused on whether components of the TME could be effective targets for PC therapy. Biomaterials have been widely applied in cancer therapy, and numerous organic or inorganic biomaterials for TME regulation have been developed to inhibit the growth and metastasis of PC, as well as reverse therapeutic resistance. In this review, we discuss various biomaterials utilized to treat PC based on different components of the TME, including, but not limited to, extracellular matrix (ECM), abnormal tumor vascularization, and tumor-associated immune cells, as well as other unconventional therapeutic strategies. Besides, the perspectives on the underlying future of theranostic nanomedicines for PC therapy are also presented.High intracellular glutathione (GSH) levels play an important role in multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer cells. It remains challenging to develop a drug delivery system that is simultaneously capable of GSH depletion and drug activation for multidrug resistance reversal. Herein, we designed a polyprodrug (denoted as PSSD) based on poly(disulfide) conjugated with doxorubicin (DOX) on the polymer side chains that exhibits GSH depletion and cascade DOX activation for drug resistance reversal. The poly(disulfide) backbone with a high disulfide density depletes intracellular antioxidant GSH via the disulfide-thiol exchange reaction to disrupt intracellular redox homeostasis in cells. Simultaneously, DOX can be activated through a cascade reaction, and degradation of the poly(disulfide) backbone further facilitates its drug release. Therefore, poly(disulfide) can be used as a GSH scavenger to reverse MDR as well as a prodrug backbone to target high intracellular GSH levels in cancer cells, providing a general strategy for drug resistance reversal.
The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of long-acting betamethasone, and its comparison with Dexamethasone as an intratympanic injection in the treatment of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL).

Thirty-one patients who do not respond to systemic steroids and poor prognosis patients were enrolled in this study. The patients divided randomly into two groups 1- Dexamethasone and 2- Long acting betamethasone. Dexamethasone (0.4ml/mg) or long-acting betamethasone (0.1ml/mg) was slowly injected (0.4 to 0.6cc) into the superior-anterior area of the tympanic membrane as 6 injections twice a week for a total of 3weeks. Right after the treatment and one, two and six months after completion of treatment, an audiometry was performed and compared with the pre-injection values.

Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) showed improvements in both groups immediately after treatment and in the follow-up period, compared to baseline. Speech Discrimination Score (SDS) also improved in both groups directly after treatment and at one-month follow-up. The hearing improvement in the Dexamethasone group was clinically better than in the Beta group, but due to the non-parametric data, it was not possible to analyze the hearing improvement process in the variable group.

According to the results obtained in this study, intratympanic corticosteroid injection in the treatment of patients with SSNHL has positive and promising results on improving hearing level.

Hox transcript antisense intergenic RNA (HOTAIR) was believed closely related with the genesis and development of colorectal cancer, but the regulatory mechanism is still to be investigated. The expression of HOTAIR was analyzed in colorectal cancer using both qRT-PCR and ISH assay. The binding of SNAIL to HNF4α promoter was assessed by ChIP. The cell lines that knock down HOTAIR, SNAIL or overexpress HNF4α were constructed using retroviral vector system. The tumorigenic and metastatic capacity of colorectal cancer cells after knocking down HOTAIR were evaluated based on xenograft assay and liver metastases model. HOTAIR was highly expressed in both tissue and cell lines of colorectal cancer, indicated a regulatory function in colorectal cancer.
