Registrasi di Hogwarts dilakukan setiap setahun sekali. Dan registrasi itu dilakukan oleh The Book of Admittance dan The Quill of Acceptance. Nantinya quill tersebut akan menulis nama beserta tanggal lahir orang yang nantinya akan sekolah di Hogwarts, lalu pada saat usia mereka sudah hampir menginjak sebelas tahun, Profs Minerva McGonagall akan mengirim surat pengajuan untuk mengundang mereka (para calon murid) di acara Sorting Hat Competition. Bagi calon murid yang memiliki keturunan muggleborn atau mudblood, akan ada utusan khusus yg nantinya menyuruh orang tua sang anak untuk menjelaskan apa itu dunia sihir.
