Evaluation of PhageDX Salmonella Assay with regard to Salmonella Detection throughout Hydroponic Fluorescent Lettuce.
In ecology, climate and other fields, (sub)systems have been identified that can transition into a qualitatively different state when a critical threshold or tipping point in a driving process is crossed. An understanding of those tipping elements is of great interest given the increasing influence of humans on the biophysical Earth system. Complex interactions exist between tipping elements, e.g. Doxycycline physical mechanisms connect subsystems of the climate system. Based on earlier work on such coupled nonlinear systems, we systematically assessed the qualitative long-term behaviour of interacting tipping elements. We developed an understanding of the consequences of interactions on the tipping behaviour allowing for tipping cascades to emerge under certain conditions. The (narrative) application of these qualitative results to real-world examples of interacting tipping elements indicates that tipping cascades with profound consequences may occur the interacting Greenland ice sheet and thermohaline ocean circulation might tip before the tipping points of the isolated subsystems are crossed. The eutrophication of the first lake in a lake chain might propagate through the following lakes without a crossing of their individual critical nutrient input levels. The possibility of emerging cascading tipping dynamics calls for the development of a unified theory of interacting tipping elements and the quantitative analysis of interacting real-world tipping elements.Self-supported and flexible bacterial cellulose (BC) based hybrid membranes were synthesized and decorated with zinc oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotube (ZnO-MWCNT) composite additives in order to modify and tune their surface and bulk properties. Two types of ZnO-MWCNT additives with different morphologies were used in a wide concentration range from 0 to 90% for BC-based hybrids produced by filtration. The interaction between BC and ZnO-MWCNT and the effect of concentration and morphology of additives on the properties like zeta potential, hydrophilicity, electrical conductivity, etc. would be an important factor in various applications. Furthermore, the as-prepared hybrid membranes were characterized with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and surface area measurement (BET). Applying the presented synthesis routes, the surface properties of BC-based membranes can be tailored easily. Results reveal that the as-prepared BC-ZnO-MWCNT hybrid membranes can be ideal candidates for different kinds of applications, such as water filtration or catalysts.Echiniscidae are undoubtedly the most thoroughly studied lineage of the class Heterotardigrada. Recently, new subfamilies and tribes grouping echiniscid genera based on traditionally recognized morphological clues have been proposed. Here, by integrative analyses of morphology and DNA sequences of numerous populations of a rare genus Cornechiniscus, we show that this hypothesized classification is artificial. Specifically, we demonstrate that Echiniscinae are diphyletic, as Bryodelphax forms a distinct phyletic lineage within Echiniscidae, and Pseudechiniscinae are polyphyletic, with Mopsechiniscus being indirectly related to Pseudechiniscus, which is closer to the Echiniscus-like genera than to other genera with pseudosegmental plates. Consequently, the subfamilies and tribes are considered as unsupported from the phylogenetic and morphological point of view. The genus Cornechiniscus is revised, and the phenotypic diagnoses of several species are updated thanks to new rich material from Africa, Asia and Europe. Cornechiniscus imperfectus sp. nov. is described from mountains of Kyrgyzstan, being the second appendaged species within the genus and the third known to exhibit dioecy. A taxonomic key to the genus is provided. Systematic positions of Acanthechiniscus and Multipseudechiniscus are also discussed. Acanthechiniscus goedeni is confirmed to be a member of the genus Acanthechiniscus.Originally considered as large, solely Cambrian apex predators, Radiodonta-a clade of stem-group euarthropods including Anomalocaris-now comprises a diverse group of predators, sediment sifters and filter feeders. These animals are only known from deposits preserving non-biomineralized material, with radiodonts often the first and/or only taxa known from such deposits. Despite the widespread and diverse nature of the group, only a handful of radiodonts are known from post-Cambrian deposits, and all originate from deposits or localities rich in other total-group euarthropods. In this contribution, we describe the first radiodont from the UK, an isolated hurdiid frontal appendage from the Tremadocian (Lower Ordovician) Dol-cyn-Afon Formation, Wales, UK. This finding is unusual in two major aspects firstly, the appendage (1.8 mm in size) is less than half the size of the next smallest radiodont frontal appendage known, and probably belonged to an animal between 6 and 15 mm in length; secondly, it was discovered in the sponge-dominated Afon Gam Biota, one of only a handful of non-biomineralized total-group euarthropods known from this deposit. This Welsh hurdiid breaks new ground for Radiodonta in terms of both its small size and sponge-dominated habitat. This occurrence demonstrates the adaptability of the group in response to the partitioning of ecosystems and environments in the late Cambrian and Early Ordovician world.Envy, the inclination to compare rewards, can be expected to unfold when inequalities in terms of pay-off differences are generated in competitive societies. It is shown that increasing levels of envy lead inevitably to a self-induced separation into a lower and an upper class. Class stratification is Nash stable and strict, with members of the same class receiving identical rewards. Upper-class agents play exclusively pure strategies, all lower-class agents the same mixed strategy. The fraction of upper-class agents decreases progressively with larger levels of envy, until a single upper-class agent is left. Numerical simulations and a complete analytic treatment of a basic reference model, the shopping trouble model, are presented. The properties of the class-stratified society are universal and only indirectly controllable through the underlying utility function, which implies that class-stratified societies are intrinsically resistant to political control. Implications for human societies are discussed. It is pointed out that the repercussions of envy are amplified when societies become increasingly competitive.
