Can psychology help? The focus of this review is on the psychological and related social factors that instigate and sustain violent extremism and polarizing group conflict. I first describe the changing global landscape of transnational terrorism, encompassing mainly violent Islamist revivalism and resurgent racial and ethnic supremacism. Next, I explore the psychosocial nature of the devoted actor and rational actor frameworks, focusing on how sacred values, identity fusion, and social network dynamics motivate and maintain extreme violence. The psychology of the will to fight and die is illustrated in behavioral and brain studies with frontline combatants in Iraq, militant supporters in Morocco, and radicalizing populations in Spain. This is followed by a consideration of how to deal with value-driven conflicts and a discussion of how the Internet and social media encourage the propagation of polarized conflict.Longitudinal integrated clerkships (LICs) are increasingly available within the United Kingdom, but gaps in knowledge remain regarding their efficacy and the influence of local context. In 2019-20, the Hull York Medical School ran a pilot LIC for 6 fourth-year medical students. This work describes the longitudinal qualitative programme evaluation. LIC students participated in two focus groups, one after four months, and another at the end of the programme. In total, 16 faculty were also interviewed regarding their experiences in developing, implementing and running the LIC. Students' GP supervisors were difficult to engage in detailed evaluation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and so were briefly surveyed at the end of the LIC. All data were pooled and analysed together using reflexive thematic analysis. Two major themes were identified 'Trajectory of the LIC', describing the learning curve students and faculty encounter, and 'Institutional decision making', describing the need for clarity regarding the programme's purpose. A total of 164 Campylobacter isolates were collected from patients with campylobacteriosis and tested for susceptibility to six antimicrobials using ETEST® strips and compared with reports from Europe and the United States. Genomes were sequenced on Illumina NextSeq to identify genetic determinants of resistance. Phenotypically, 1.8%, 14.0%, 14.6%, and 20.1% of isolates were resistant to erythromycin (ERY), ampicillin, tetracycline (TET), and ciprofloxacin (CIP), respectively. Comparing published phenotypic results of antimicrobial resistance in several European countries and the United States with these Australian isolates reveals that rates observed in Australia are among the lowest observed for ERY, CIP, and TET for both C. coli and C. jejuni. For each antimicrobial tested, concordance between resistance phenotype and genotype ranged from 66.6% to 100.0%. This study highlights that, among industrialized countries, Portugal and Spain have very high levels of antimicrobial resistance in C. jejuni and C. coli, especially when compared with the United Kingdom, United States, and Australia.Objective Diode laser (DL) is a frequently preferred tool for soft tissue incision and ablation in oral surgery. The aim of this study was to find the most effective irradiation time protocol to avoid potential harmful temperature rise in pulp during DL-assisted gingivectomy. Materials and methods Ninety human freshly extracted teeth (30 anterior, 30 premolar, and 30 molar) were irradiated using a 940 nm DL with power output of 1 and 2 W and exposure time of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 sec per specimen. Intrapulpal temperature was evaluated with thermocouple. Additionally, the effect of dark deposits on root surface for intrapulpal temperature rise was investigated. Temperature differences with every 10 sec were evaluated for three different teeth types, and statistical analyses were performed. Results Anterior and premolar teeth exceeded the threshold values earlier than molar teeth for both 1 and 2 W. Despite the significant differences among the types of teeth, at 10 sec, temperature rise recorded for all types of teeth was below the critical value of 5.6°C, which cause pulp damage. Dark deposits on teeth surface boosted thermal effect of DLs (p less then 0.01). Conclusions Gingivectomy with DLs at 1 W on anterior, premolar, and molar teeth for 20, 40, and 60 sec, respectively, generates acceptable temperature rise; however, it should be less then 10, 20, and 40 sec at 2 W, respectively. Especially in the anterior teeth, DLs should be performed with caution to avoid pulp damage.Sindbis virus (SINV) is a mosquito-borne avian hosted virus that is widely distributed in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Disease in humans is documented mainly from Northern Europe and South Africa and associated with genotype I. In 2018 under extremely warm climatic conditions, a small outbreak of 71 diagnosed SINV infections was recorded in Finland. We screened 52 mosquito pools (570 mosquitoes) and 223 human sera for SINV with real-time RT-PCR and the positive samples with virus isolation. One SINV strain was isolated from a pool (n = 13) of genus Ochlerotatus mosquitoes and three strains from patient serum samples. Complete genome analysis suggested all the isolates to be divergent from one another and related to previous Finnish, Swedish, and German strains. The study provides evidence of SINV strain transfer within Europe across regions with different epidemiological characteristics. Whether these are influenced by different mosquito genera involved in the transmission remains to be studied.
