Upgrades will give you a boost in specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. A random substat is also increased with every upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a greater value for trade as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be made on any type of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader every few weeks, to keep your equipment up-to-date.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current level of the equipment being upgraded however, they will always be less expensive than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players from NPCs of item upgraders for various currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once enhance equipment is purchased it can be used on any weapon or tool with a button, which will show an image of the item at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the item slot, and the current item level. For example weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and the chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.


Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are available only via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit as well as an issue.

In Season 3, several new features were added to the upgrade system. After a player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item level, will cost less. This is regardless of whether the items come from an entirely different set of gear.

Crests

The use of these currencies isn't too complicated, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it will no longer require Flightstones. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest level possible on all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests in a wise manner, as they are only used for one purpose. It's best to put your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear you can find and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that fill multiple slots. The account-wide discount will only be applicable if all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
