Upgrades give you boosts in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

Once an upgrade is purchased it can be applied to any weapon or tool with a button, which will display a preview of the item at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades offer discounts on Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain amount, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Many locations offer item upgraders which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and the chance to obtain an entirely new recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded. It can also be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no item upgrader available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require several methods that are both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with several new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a certain level for an item in an armor slot, upgrading further items to the same level will cost less even in the event that they are part of a different gear set.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievement.
