To examine the prevalence of young childrens' reported experiences of racial discrimination and to assess whether discriminatory experiences vary by gender, religion and country of birth.
Data came from Speak Out Against Racism (SOAR), a cross-sectional study of 4664 public school students in grades 5-9 in two Australian states in 2017. An adaption of the Adolescent Discrimination Distress Index (ADDI), as a measure of discrimination, was used across four Indigenous and ethnic categories (Indigenous, Asian and non-Asian visible minorities, Anglo/European). Effect-measure modification (EMM) examined how experiences of racial discrimination across ethnic groups varied by gender, country of birth and religion.
A sizeable proportion (40%) of students reported experiencing racial discrimination. click here Indigenous, Asian and non-Asian visible minority students reported higher rates of experiencing racial discrimination than their Anglo-European peers. Male students reported higher rates of experiencing racial discrimination than female students. Foreign-born students reported experiencing racial discrimination more often than native-born students, and both Christian and religious minorities experienced racial discrimination more often than students identifying with the dominant "No religion" group.
The findings highlight the prevalence of racial discrimination among adolescents and how gender, country of birth and religion can increase risk of these experiences.
The findings highlight the prevalence of racial discrimination among adolescents and how gender, country of birth and religion can increase risk of these experiences.High pre-treatment serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) levels are associated with poor overall survival (OS) of patients with newly diagnosed follicular lymphoma (FL). We evaluated the usefulness of pre-treatment sIL-2R levels in selecting a treatment regimen for advanced-stage FL with low tumor burden (FL-LTB). This retrospective, multicenter observational study enrolled consecutive patients who received a rituximab-containing regimen for newly diagnosed advanced stage FL-LTB (grade 1-3a) between 2008 and 2018. We applied a previously reported cut-off value of 1800 IU/mL for sIL-2R. A total of 211 patients were eligible for the analysis. Among patients with high sIL-2R (47 patients, 22.3%), the OS rates for patients treated by rituximab monotherapy (R-mono) (11 patients) were significantly lower than those treated by rituximab-combination chemotherapy (R-chemo) (36 patients) 5-year OS rates were 66.7% and 94.4%, respectively (P = 0.007). Among patients with low sIL-2R (164 patients, 77.7%), OS rates were comparably good between the R-mono group (34 patients) and the R-chemo group (130 patients) 5-year OS rates were 100% and 98.3%, respectively (P = 0.38). Our results suggest that R-chemo may yield better OS than R-mono for patients with newly diagnosed advanced-stage FL-LTB and high pre-treatment serum sIL-2R levels.
This project aimed to survey the clinical characteristics and survivals of hyperprogressive disease (HPD) mediated by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in an attempt to explore the potential predictors.
After searching PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library databases, 12 studies incorporating 1766 individuals were enrolled. The data were analyzed with Review manager 5.3 software.
The results revealed HPD correlated with previous metastatic sites > 2 (OR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.33-2.59, P = 0.0003), liver metastasis (OR = 3.35, 95% CI 2.09-5.35, P < 0.00001), Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) score ≥ 2 (OR = 2.80, 95% CI 1.85-4.23, P < 0.00001), higher ECOG PS (OR = 1.60, 95% CI 1.13-2.27, P = 0.008) and LDH > upper limits of normal (ULN) (OR = 2.32, 95% CI 1.51-3.58, P = 0.0001). Instead, HPD was unrelated to gender, age, smoking status, PD-L1 expression, therapy, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, the histology, the status of EGFR, ALK and KRAS in non-small cell lung cancer and HER-2 expression in advanced gastric cancer. Moreover, HPD was evidently correlated with ashorter OS (HR = 2.92, 95% CI 1.79-4.76, P < 0.0001) and PFS (HR = 3.62, 95% CI 2.79-4.68, P < 0.00001). The same phenomena existed in stratified studies based on study regions and tumor types.
This study demonstrated that HPD was related to the number ofprior metastatic sites > 2, liver metastasis, RMH score ≥ 2, higher ECOG PS score and LDH > ULN. Moreover, HPD was correlated with a poor OS and PFS in patients following ICI therapy.

The ecological phenomenon of fungal fairy rings is usually found in grasslands and caused by the growth of specific fairy ring fungi in soil. The fairy rings are classified into three zones (DARK, DEAD, and OUT), and they have the potential to increase crop yield. Among these fairy rings, distinct characteristics of type I fairy rings can be seen in the rings formed by Leucocalocybe mongolica (LM). Our studies addressed changes in the soil microbial structure due to LM fairy rings to enhance understand of this ecological phenomenon.
In the present study, we report the soil microbial analysis results (fungi and bacteria), including those of metabarcoding (16s rRNA, ITS), microbial quantity, and metagenomics surveys of soils collected from various fairy ring zones, of 6 LM fairy rings. All sampling sites cover the grasslands of Mongolian Plateau in China.
First, we found through metabarcoding surveys that the difference in microbial diversity is relatively less in bacteria and that the abundance of fairy ring fungi (LM) is relatively high in DEAD zones. We also identified eight bacterial and fungal families, including Sphingobacteriaceae and Sphingomonadaceae that were enriched within the soils of fairy ring zones. Second, we found that the abundance of soil bacteria in the DEAD zones is sharply increased along with the growth of fairy ring fungi (LM). Third, we found through shotgun sequencing that fairy ring-infected zones, DARK and DEAD, exhibit greater genetic diversity than OUT zones. Finally, we showed that the fairy ring ecosystem is the center for a rich grassland microbial community.
The reported data can improve our understanding of type I fairy rings and will be further insightful to the research on crop production.
