Advanced Backcross (AB) populations have been widely used to identify and utilize beneficial alleles in various crops such as rice, tomato, wheat and barley. For the development of an AB population, a controlled crossing scheme is used and this controlled crossing along with the selection (both natural and artificial) of agronomically-adapted alleles during the development of AB population may lead to unbalanced allele frequencies in the population. However, it is commonly believed that interval mapping mapping of traits in experimental crosses such as AB populations are immune to the deviations from the expected frequencies under Mendelian segregation. Using two AB populations and simulated data sets as examples, we describe the severity of the problem caused by unbalanced allele frequencies in quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping and demonstrate how it can be corrected using the linear mixed model having a polygenic effect with the covariance structure (genomic relationship matrix) calculated from molecular markers.
Most refugees and other forced migrants have experienced potentially traumatic events (PTEs). Torture and other traumatic experiences, as well as various daily stressors, impact the mental health and psychosocial well-being of war-affected populations.
The study includes two population-based samples of Iranian and Iraqi men living in Finland and Sweden. The Finnish Migrant Health and Well-being Study (Maamu) was conducted in 2010-2012. The Linköping study was conducted in Sweden in 2005. TVB-2640 in vivo In both samples, health and well-being measures, social and economic outcomes as well as health service utilization were reported.
The final sample for analysis consisted of two groups of males of Iranian or Iraqi origin 278 residents in Finland and 267 residents in Sweden. Both groups were subdivided according to the reported PTEs Torture survivors; Other PTEs; No PTEs. Migrants that reported PTEs, torture survivors in particular, had significantly poorer social and health outcomes. Torture survivors also reported lower trust and confidence in authorities and public service providers, as well as more loneliness, social isolation and experiences of discrimination.
Torture and other PTEs prevalent in refugee and migrant populations create a wide-ranging and long-term impact in terms of increased risk of various types of adverse social and health conditions. Early identification through systematic and effective screening should be the first step in guiding migrants and refugees suffering from experiences of torture and other PTEs to flexible, multidisciplinary services.

The list of terms in the Glossary is not intended to be either exhaustive or exclusive, and draws upon the wide range of disciplines from which health promotion has its origins. The definitions should not be regarded as 'the final word' on the terms included. Definitions by their very nature are restrictive, often representing summaries of complex ideas and actions. The use of terms will often be context-specific, and influenced by different social, cultural and economic conditions in countries and communities. Despite these obvious restrictions, the glossary has been assembled to enable as wide an audience as possible to understand the basic ideas and concepts which are central to the development of health promotion.
The role of synonymous single-nucleotide variants in human health and disease is poorly understood, yet evidence suggests that this class of "silent" genetic variation plays multiple regulatory roles in both transcription and translation. One mechanism by which synonymous codons direct and modulate the translational process is through alteration of the elaborate structure formed by single-stranded mRNA molecules. While tools to computationally predict the effect of non-synonymous variants on protein structure are plentiful, analogous tools to systematically assess how synonymous variants might disrupt mRNA structure are lacking.
We developed novel software using a parallel processing framework for large-scale generation of secondary RNA structures and folding statistics for the transcriptome of any species. Focusing our analysis on the human transcriptome, we calculated 5 billion RNA-folding statistics for 469 million single-nucleotide variants in 45,800 transcripts. By considering the impact of all possiders due to their effects on mRNA structure. To evaluate the potential pathogenic impact of synonymous variants, we provide RNA stability, edge distance, and diversity metrics for every nucleotide in the human transcriptome and introduce a "Structural Predictivity Index" (SPI) to quantify structural constraint operating on any synonymous variant. Because no single RNA-folding metric can capture the diversity of mechanisms by which a variant could alter secondary mRNA structure, we generated a SUmmarized RNA Folding (SURF) metric to provide a single measurement to predict the impact of secondary structure altering variants in human genetic studies.The potential for antibiotics to affect the ecology and evolution of the human gut microbiota is well recognised and has wide-ranging implications for host health. Here, we review the findings of key studies that surveyed the human gut microbiota during antibiotic treatment. We find several broad patterns including the loss of diversity, disturbance of community composition, suppression of bacteria in the Actinobacteria phylum, amplification of bacteria in the Bacteroidetes phylum, and promotion of antibiotic resistance. Such changes to the microbiota were often, but not always, recovered following the end of treatment. However, many studies reported unique and/or contradictory results, which highlights our inability to meaningfully predict or explain the effects of antibiotic treatment on the human gut microbiome. This problem arises from variation between existing studies in three major categories differences in dose, class, and combinations of antibiotic treatments used; differences in demographics, lifestyles, and locations of subjects; and differences in measurements, analyses, and reporting styles used by researchers.
