This study aimed to microencapsulate Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus) ATCC 7469 with whey protein concentrate (WPC), maltodextrin and trehalose by spray drying and to assess the impact of microencapsulation on cell viability and the properties of the dried powders. Spray-drying conditions, including inlet air temperature, air flow rate and feed pump, were fixed as independent variables, while probiotic survival, moisture content, water activity and effective yield were established as dependent variables. The survival of encapsulated L. rhamnosus by spray drying was optimized with response surface methodology, and the stability of the powder was assessed. The optimum spray-drying conditions were an inlet air temperature, air flow rate and feed pump rate of 169 °C, 33 m3·h-1 and 16 mL·min-1, respectively, survival of 70%, air aspiration of 84% and outlet air temperature of 52 °C, achieving an overall desirability of 0.96. The physicochemical and structural characteristics of the produced powder were acceptable for application with regard to residual water content, hygroscopicity, water activity, and particle size. The results indicated that a protein-trehalose-maltodextrin mixture is a good wall material to encapsulate L. rhamnosus, showing important thermal protection during the drying process and increasing survival. However, a decrease in this capacity is observed at an air outlet temperature of approximately 101 °C. The possible effects of the wall materials and the drying conditions on survival are also discussed.Replacing the ingredients used in biscuits with potential nutritive ingredients would be beneficial to improve the nutritional quality of the biscuits. Although, finger millet is highly nutritious when compared to other most commonly consumed cereals, limited availability of processed food products in ready-to-eat form has restricted the finger millet consumption. The present study was focused on formulating biscuits by replacing refined wheat flour with finger millet flour. Four biscuit samples were formulated by replacing different percentages of refined wheat flour with finger millet flour. selleckchem Physicochemical and microbiological properties of the biscuits were evaluated. Nutritional and antioxidant properties of the biscuit, which was formulated by replacing 50% of refined wheat flour with finger millet flour, were evaluated and compared with a control biscuit which was prepared using refined wheat flour. The finger millet flour incorporated biscuit was nutritionally superior to the control biscuit in terms of dietary fibers and polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids. Besides, replacement of refined wheat flour with finger millet flour in biscuit formulation enhanced the antioxidant properties of the biscuit. Therefore, the finger millet flour incorporated biscuit can be considered as a good source of antioxidants.AimsSocio-economic conditions in early life are important contributors to cardiovascular disease - the leading cause of mortality globally - in later life. We studied coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke in adulthood among people born out of wedlock in two historical periods before and during World War II in Finland. Methods We compared offspring born out of wedlock before (1934-1939) and during (1940-1944) World War II with the offspring of married mothers in the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study. The war affected the position of unmarried mothers in society. We followed the study subjects from 1971 to 2014 and identified deaths and hospital admissions from CHD and stroke. Data were analysed using a Cox regression, adjusting for other childhood and adulthood socio-economic circumstances. Results The rate of out-of-wedlock births was 240/4052 (5.9%) before World War II and 397/9197 (4.3%) during World War II. Among those born before World War II, out-of-wedlock birth was associated with an increased risk of stroke (hazard ratio (HR)=1.44; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00-2.07) and CHD (HR=1.37; 95% CI 1.02-1.86). Among those born out of wedlock during World War II, the risks of stroke (HR=0.89; 95% CI 0.58-1.36) and CHD (HR=0.70; 95% CI 0.48=1.03) were similar to those observed for the offspring of married mothers. The p-values for interaction of unmarried×World War II were (p=0.015) for stroke and (p=0.003) for CHD. Conclusions In a society in which marriage is normative, being born out of wedlock is an important predictor of lifelong health disadvantage. However, this may change rapidly when societal circumstances change, such as during a war.Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)-related hemolysis is common with reported incidence of 5%-18%. Plasma free hemoglobin (PFH) levels are used as a marker for hemolysis and elevated PFH is associated with acute kidney injury (AKI). Limited literature exists regarding treatment of severe hemolysis and clearance of PFH. We report 8-year-old male child on VA ECMO with severe hemolysis (PFH 895 mg/dL) and worsening AKI showing significant improvement in PFH after single volume exchange plasmapheresis with Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) performed in tandem via ECMO circuit.Aims The Faroe Islands is considered a homogeneous society and has a low Gini coefficient, but the knowledge about the social distribution of health and disease is sparse. In a large population-based sample we investigated (a) the association between socioeconomic position defined by level of education and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus by self-report in the Faroe Islands; and (b) to what degree lifestyle factors mediate the association. Methods We used cross-sectional data from the population-based Public Health Survey Faroes 2015 (n=1095). We present odds ratios for type 2 diabetes mellitus by socioeconomic position from logistic regression models. In our main model we adjusted for potential confounders and in a secondary model we additionally adjusted for potential mediating lifestyle factors. Results Individuals with middle and low levels of education display higher odds ratios of type 2 diabetes mellitus of 2.80 (95% confidence interval 1.32-5.92) and 4.65 (95% confidence interval 1.93-11.17) in adjusted analysis, respectively, compared to their counterparts with high education.
