Aesthetic Disability, Eye Diseases, along with Dementia Chance: A Systematic Assessment as well as Meta-Analysis.
Plant-based substitutes are designed to have the same use as animal-based foods in the diet and could therefore assist the transition toward more plant-based diets. However, their nutritional impact has not been characterized.

We assessed and compared the effects of plant-based substitutes on the nutritional quality of the diet.

We simulated separately the substitution of meat, milk, and dairy desserts with 96 plant-based substitutes in the diets of 2121 adults (18-79 y old) from the cross-sectional French Third Individual and National Study on Food Consumption Survey (INCA3; 2014-2015). The quality of initial individual diets and the 203,616 substituted diets was evaluated using the Probability of Adequate Nutrient Intake (PANDiet) scoring system, which assesses the probability of adequate (sufficient and not excessive) nutrient intake; also, nutrient security was evaluated using the SecDiet scoring system, which assesses the risk of overt deficiency.

Impacts on PANDiet depended on both the food subscurity. Plant-based substitutes that include legumes appear more nutritionally adequate to substitute animal products than do other substitutes.
Plant-based substitutes had a small effect on overall diet quality and heterogeneous impacts on nutrient adequacy and security. Plant-based substitutes that include legumes appear more nutritionally adequate to substitute animal products than do other substitutes. In Canada, unhealthy diets are associated with several chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, and thus negatively impact the health and well-being of Canadians. Consequently, unhealthy diets are associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality in Canada. Recently, plant-based diets have gained in popularity due to their ability to provide a diet that is nutritionally adequate and health-conscious in addition to supporting environmental sustainability. The adoption of plant-based diets may address the substantial need to improve the health and well-being of Canadians, while also having a positive global environmental impact such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of this scoping review was to identify current knowledge on the nutritional adequacy of plant-based diets and their relation with chronic conditions to support improved health and well-being of Canadians while identifying gaps in knowledge. While previous studies have shown that cigarette smoking increases the infectiousness of tuberculosis patients, the impact of smoking cessation on tuberculosis transmissibility has not been evaluated.

Between 2009 and 2012, we enrolled 4,500 tuberculosis patients and followed 14,044 household contacts in Lima, Peru. Tuberculosis patients were classified into four categories never smoked, quit in the distant past (stopped smoking >2 months prior to time of diagnosis), recently quit (stopped smoking ≤2 months prior to time of diagnosis), and active smokers. We used a modified Poisson generalized estimating equation to assess the risk of tuberculosis infection of child contacts at enrollment and by six months of follow-up.

In total, 1,371 (76.8%) child contacts were exposed to patients who had never smoked, 211 (11.8%) were exposed to distant quitters, 155 (8.7%) were exposed to recent quitters, and 49 (2.7%) were exposed to active smokers. Compared to child contacts of index patients who had never smoked, child contacts of recent quitters had a similar risk of tuberculosis infection at enrollment (adjusted risk ratio [aRR], 0.81, 95% CI, 0.50-1.32) and by six months of follow-up (aRR, 0.76, 95% CI, 0.51-1.13); child contacts of recent quitters had a significantly reduced risk of tuberculosis infection compared to contacts of active smokers (enrollment aRR, 0.45, 95% CI, 0.24-0.87; 6-month follow-up aRR, 0.48, 95% CI, 0.29-0.79).

Our results show that the adverse effects of smoking on the transmissibility of tuberculosis are significantly reduced shortly after quitting smoking, reinforcing the importance of smoking cessation interventions in tuberculosis control.

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, a high-carbohydrate diet, is highly recommended based on its cardiovascular risk benefits, yet adherence remains persistently low. How subjective impressions of this diet contribute to adherence has not been thoroughly explored. The OmniCarb trial, which compared DASH-style diets varying in glycemic index (GI) and carbohydrate amount, surveyed subjective impressions of such diets.

We examined the effects of GI and carbohydrate amount on qualitative aspects of diet acceptability through secondary outcomes in the OmniCarb trial.

OmniCarb was a randomized, crossover trial of 4 DASH-style diets varying by GI (≥65compared with≤45) and carbohydrate amount (40% compared with 58%kcal) in overweight or obese (BMI≥25 kg/m2)adults (n=163). Participants consumed each diet in random order over 5-wk periods, separated by 2-wk washouts. At baseline and the end of each feeding period, participants rated hunger, diet satisfaction, and gastrointestinal symptoms (dieartburn in adults with overweight or obesity. This trial is registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00608049.
Although a higher carbohydrate amount in DASH-style diets can increase diet satisfaction, it can also decrease satiety and increase heartburn in adults with overweight or obesity. This trial is registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00608049.
Mild Parkinsonian Signs (MPS), highly prevalent in older adults, predict disability. It is unknown whether energy decline, a predictor of mobility disability, is also associated with MPS. We hypothesized that those with MPS had greater decline in self-reported energy levels (SEL) than those without MPS, and that SEL decline and MPS share neural substrates.

Using data from the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study, we analyzed 293 Parkinson's Disease-free participants (83±3 years old, 39% Black, 58% women) with neuroimaging data, MPS evaluation by Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale in 2006-2008, and ≥ 3 measures of SEL since 1999-2000. Individual SEL slopes were computed via linear mixed models. compound78c Associations of SEL slopes with MPS were tested using logistic regression models. Association of SEL slope with volume of striatum, sensorimotor, and cognitive regions were examined using linear regression models adjusted for normalized total gray matter volume. Models were adjusted for baseline SEL, mobility, demographics, and comorbidities.
