alteration, which may have implications for potential therapeutic options. This study explored the effect of 70-mT magnetic field on wastewater treatment capacity for activated sludge in long-term laboratory-scale experiments. Metagenomic sequencing were conducted based on Illumina HiSeq 2000 platform after DNA extraction of the activated sludge. Then the effect of the magnetic field on the microbial unigene and metabolic pathways in activated sludge was investigated. As a result, higher pollutant removal was observed at 70 mT, with which the elimination of total nitrogen (TN) was the most effective. Functional genes annotated based on eggNOG database showed that unigenes related to information storage and processing were enhanced by the magnetic field. For CAZy classification, category such as glycosyl transferases was more abundant in the reactor with magnetic field, which has been shown to promote the entire energy supply pathway. Additionally, in the KEGG categories, unigenes related to signaling molecules and interaction were significantly inhibited. Through the enrichment analysis of the nitrogen metabolism pathway, the magnetic field inhibited anabolic nitrate reduction by significantly inhibiting enzymes such as [EC1.7.7.2], [EC1.7.7.1], [EC3.5.5.1], [EC1.4.1.2] and [EC4.2.1.1], which are related to the improvement of the denitrification ability. This study can provide insight for future research on the response mechanism of activated sludge to magnetic fields.LTR-retrotransposons, knobs and structural chromosome alterations contribute to shape the structure and organization of the Zea mays karyotype. Our initial nuclear DNA content data of Z. mays accessions revealed an intraspecific variation (2 C = 2.00 pg to 2 C = 6.10 pg), suggesting differences in their karyotypes. We aimed to compare the karyotypes of three Z. mays accessions in search of the differences and similarities among them. learn more Karyotype divergences were demonstrated among the accessions, despite their common chromosome number (2n = 20) and ancestral origin. Cytogenomic analyses showed that repetitive sequences and structural chromosome alterations play a significant role in promoting intraspecific nuclear DNA content variation. In addition, heterozygous terminal deletion in chromosome 3 was pointed out as a cause of lower nuclear 2 C value. Besides this, translocation was also observed in the short arm of chromosome 1. Differently, higher 2 C value was associated with the more abundant distribution of LTR-retrotransposons from the family Grande in the karyotype. Moreover, heteromorphism involving the number and position of the 180-bp knob sequence was found among the accessions. Taken together, we provide insights on the pivotal role played by repetitive sequences and structural chromosome alterations in shaping the karyotype of Z. mays.Due to the aging population, the number of completely bedridden individuals is expected to increase, and such individuals are at high risk of developing urinary calculi. This retrospective study included 32 consecutive bedridden patients, who had undergone endoscopic lithotripsy between 2010 and 2019, and aimed to identify the treatment outcomes of endoscopic lithotripsy for bedridden patients. A total of 45 endoscopic lithotripsies were performed to treat stones (median cumulative diameter, 24 mm). The stone-free rate (SFR) less then 4 mm and complete SFR (0 mm) were achieved in 81% and 63% of patients, respectively. Postoperatively, 10 patients (22%) developed symptoms of systemic inflammatory response syndrome, and three patients (7%) had bloodstream infections. Except for one patient (3%) having a retained ureteral stent ultimately died from septic shock, drainage tube-free discharge was achieved in all patients. The 2-year cumulative incidence of stone-related events, and overall mortality rate, were 18% and 27%, respectively. Endoscopic lithotripsy is well tolerated and is associated with a high success rate, even with severe comorbidities and a relatively large stone burden. Physicians should consider performing endoscopic lithotripsy in bedridden patients with symptomatic urinary calculi regardless of their relatively short life expectancy and the remote risk of perioperative mortality.Given the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, identification of immunogenic targets against the coronavirus spike glycoprotein will provide crucial advances towards the development of sensitive diagnostic tools and potential vaccine candidate targets. In this study, using pools of overlapping linear B-cell peptides, we report two IgG immunodominant regions on SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein that are recognised by sera from COVID-19 convalescent patients. Notably, one is specific to SARS-CoV-2, which is located in close proximity to the receptor binding domain. The other region, which is localised at the fusion peptide, could potentially function as a pan-SARS target. Functionally, antibody depletion assays demonstrate that antibodies targeting these immunodominant regions significantly alter virus neutralisation capacities. Taken together, identification and validation of these neutralising B-cell epitopes will provide insights towards the design of diagnostics and vaccine candidates against this high priority coronavirus. With increasing numbers of patients surviving acute intoxication phase, long-term complication after paraquat intoxication is a topic worth exploring, such as osteonecrosis (ON) of femoral head. We reviewed 86 paraquat-intoxicated survivors between 2000 and 2012 in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, a 3700-bed tertiary hospital in Taiwan. With all the patients underwent same detoxification protocol in the acute stage, 17.4% of paraquat poisoning survivors developed ON of femoral head requiring surgery during follow up. Most of ON episodes occurred within 2 to 4 years after paraquat intoxication and then plateau after 6 years. ON patients exhibited higher SOFA scores than non-ON patients (2.80 ± 2.14 vs. 1.76 ± 1.52, p = 0.028). Furthermore, AKIN scores are also higher in the ON patients than non-ON patients (0.87 ± 1.13 vs. 0.38 ± 0.74, p = 0.040). Multivariate logistic regression showed higher AKIN score and higher partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the blood 48 hours after admission significantly predicted ON of femoral head after paraquat intoxication (p = 0.
