One important biomechanical principle used in the execution phase of a badminton overhead clear is projectile motion. This is the path the shuttle takes through the air after being hit, and it’s mainly affected by gravity and air resistance. There are three parts (called subfactors) that make up projectile motion: angle of release, height of release, and speed of release. For the shot to be effective, the shuttle should be hit at a good angle—usually between 45 and 60 degrees—so it goes high and deep into the back of the opponent’s court. The height of release helps with this too. The higher the shuttle is hit (above and slightly in front of the head), the longer it stays in the air and the further it can go. The speed of release is about how fast the shuttle leaves the racket. This depends on how much power you use with your shoulders, core, and wrist. When all of these are used properly, the shuttle travels further and faster, making it harder for the opponent to return. This gives the player more time to recover and get ready for the next shot. Using projectile motion well during the execution phase leads to a more powerful and accurate overhead clear.
