Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary bone tumor in children and adolescents. The etiology of OS is largely unknown but may be informed by comparisons of incidence and trends between geographic regions. selleck Using the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) data from 1988 to 2012, we present OS age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs; cases/million) and average annual percent change (AAPC) and 95% confidence interval (CI) by geographic region among the age groups 0-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-59, 60-79, 0-79. Among the 10-19 age group, we also used the most recent data (2008-2012) to present the ASRs for each country. We observed little variation in OS incidence between geographic regions in 2008-2012 across all age groups. Overall, the ASR for 0-79 ranged from 2 cases per million in Southern Asia to 4.2 in Sub-Saharan Africa. A bimodal distribution in incidence was observed with peaks in the 10-19 and 60-79 age groups across all regions over time. Overall, OS incidence was relatively stable across 1988-2012 with the only statistically significant increases in the 0-79 age group observed in Eastern Asia (AAPC 1.8; 95% CI 0.6, 1.9) and Sub-Saharan Africa (AAPC 3.1; 95% CI 0.5, 5.8). The small variation in incidence between regions and the stability in incidence over time suggests that OS carcinogenesis is not influenced by environmental or time-varying exposures.Little is known about the influence of prediagnosis and postdiagnosis physical activity on ovarian cancer survival. We investigated this association in two large cohorts, the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and NHSII. Analyses included 1461 women with confirmed invasive, epithelial ovarian cancer and data on physical activity. Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for ovarian cancer-specific mortality. Ovarian cancer-specific mortality was not associated with physical activity reported 1-8 years before diagnosis overall (≥7.5 vs less then 1.5 MET-hours/week, HR = 0.96), for high-grade serous/ poorly differentiated tumors, or non-serous/ low-grade serous tumors (P-heterogeneity = .45). An inverse association was observed for activity 1-4 years after diagnosis (≥7.5 vs less then 1.5 MET-hours/week, HR = 0.67, 95%CI 0.48-0.94), with similar results by histotype (P-heterogeneity = .53). Women who decreased their activity from ≥7.5 MET-hours/week 1-8 years before diagnosis to less then 7.5 MET-hours/week 1-4 years after diagnosis, compared to those with less then 7.5 MET-hours/week across periods, had a 49% increased risk of death (HR = 1.49, 95%CI 1.07-2.08). Physical activity after, but not before, ovarian cancer diagnosis was associated with better prognosis.
The infection by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with multiple cutaneous manifestations, although characterization of them in Hispanic patients with darker skin phototypes is lacking. The objective of this study is to characterize the clinical dermatological manifestations associated with COVID-19 infection in cases with few or without general symptoms in patients from Latin America.
Cross-sectional study using a questionnaire that was made for health professionals (physicians with a specialty in dermatology) to investigate dermatological lesions associated with COVID-19 infection in patients from 25 countries of Latin America. The survey was active from June 9 to July 30, 2020.
In this study, information was collected from a total of 347 patients. We found a female gender predominance 179/347 (51.6%). The mean age at presentation was 40.87years. The most frequent dermatological manifestations were maculopapular rash and urticarial lesions, followed by papulovesicular lesions, ves) and will allow contact tracing to mitigate the impact on health systems at different levels.Heteranthery, the presence of distinct stamen types within a flower, is commonly explained as functional adaptation to alleviate the "pollen dilemma," defined as the dual and conflicting function of pollen as pollinator food resource and male reproductive agent. A single primary hypothesis, "division of labor," has been central in studies on heteranthery. This hypothesis postulates that one stamen type functions in rewarding pollen-collecting pollinators and the other in reproduction, thereby minimizing pollen loss. Only recently, alternative functions (i.e., staggered pollen release), were proposed, but comparative and experimental investigations are lagging behind. Here, we used 63 species of the tribe Merianieae (Melastomataceae) to demonstrate that, against theory, heteranthery occurs in flowers offering rewards other than pollen, such as staminal food bodies or nectar. Although shifts in reward type released species from the "pollen dilemma," heteranthery has evolved repeatedly de novo in food-body-rewarding, passerine-pollinated flowers. We used field investigations to show that foraging passerines discriminated between stamen types and removed large stamens more quickly than small stamens. Passerines removed small stamens on separate visits towards the end of flower anthesis. We propose that the staggered increase in nutritive content of small stamens functions to increase chances for outcross-pollen transfer.
The application of optical sensing technology in food adulteration detection has been extensively studied. However, due to the impact of packaging materials on the penetration depth of photons in foods and the interference from the optical properties of the packaging materials themselves, the use of optical sensing technology to detect packaged foods adulteration is still a well-known problem.
The line-scan Raman imaging system was used to collect Raman hyperspectral images of adulterated sugars, made by mixing soft sugar and cheap glucose in seven different ratios. With the 0 and 3 mm (optimal offset distance) between line-laser source and scanning line, the Raman hyperspectral images of adulterated sugars covered by packaging plastic were acquired respectively. Using adulterated samples un-covered by packaging plastic as training samples, the Random Forest prediction model was developed, and excellent prediction performance was achieved for adulterated samples un-covered by packaging plastics. Compared with Raman data acquired with 0 mm offset distance, the performance of the prediction model was significantly improved, with 0.
