The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of the OptiBP mobile application based on an optical signal recorded by placing the patient's fingertip on a smartphone's camera to estimate blood pressure (BP). Measurements were carried out in a general population according to existing standards of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Participants were recruited during a scheduled appointment at the hypertension clinic of Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland. Age, gender and BP distribution were collected to fulfill AAMI/ESH/ISO universal standards. Both auscultatory BP references and OptiBP were measured and compared using the opposite arm simultaneous method as described in the 81060-22018 ISO norm.

A total of 353 paired recordings from 91 subjects were analyzed. For validation criterion 1, the mean ± SD between OptiBP and reference BP recordings was respectively 0.5 ± 7.7 mmHg and 0.4 ± 4.6 mmHg for SBP and DBP. For validation criterion 2, the SD of the averaged BP differences between OptiBP and reference BP per subject was 6.3 mmHg and 3.5 mmHg for SBP and DBP. OptiBP acceptance rate was 85%.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) impact the intestinal microbiota by increasing beneficial bacteria in infants and adults and are safe and well tolerated in these age groups. However, effects on intestinal microbiota, safety and digestive tolerance in children have not been assessed. The aims of this trial were to evaluate if HMOs are able to specifically modulate the intestinal microbiota in children, and to assess safety and digestive tolerance.

In this randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, 75 children with overweight (including obesity) aged 6-12 years were randomized to receive 2'-fucosyllactose (2'FL), a mix of 2'FL and lacto-N-neotetraose (Mix), or a glucose placebo orally administrated once per day for eight weeks.

The relative abundance of bifidobacteria increased significantly after four (p < 0.001) and eight (p = 0.025) weeks of intervention in the 2'FL-group and after four weeks (p = 0.033) in the Mix-group, whereas no change was observed in the placebo group. Compared to placebo, the 2'FL-group had a significant increase in bifidobacteria abundance after four weeks (p < 0.001) and eight weeks (p = 0.010) and the Mix-group showed a tendency to increased bifidobacteria abundance after four (p = 0.071) and eight weeks (p = 0.071). Bifidobacterium adolescentis drove the bifidogenic effect in the two groups. Biochemical markers indicated no safety concerns, and the products did not induce digestive tolerance issues as assessed by Gastrointestinal Symptoms Rating Scale and Bristol Stool Form Scale.

To evaluate the neurocognitive and motor development of biliary atresia (BA) patients in childhood and adolescence and to identify risk factors for impaired outcome.

We invited all BA patients between ages 1-20 years followed up at Helsinki University Children's Hospital in Finland between 1 January 2019 to 31 January 2020 to participate. All participants underwent age-appropriate validated neurocognitive tests. Participants between 3.0-16.9 years of age were assessed with the Movement Assessment Battery for children, version 2. Guardians of participants between ages 5.0-17.0 years filled the Five-to-Fifteen-Revised (5-15R) parental questionnaire.

The mean (±standard deviation [SD]) total intelligence quotient (IQ) of the 39 participants was 91±15, lower compared to test norms (mean IQ 100 ± 15, p < 0.01). Earlier clearance of jaundice (COJ) had a positive effect on mean (±SD) total IQ (COJ < 3 months 96 ± 13 vs COJ ≥ 3 months post-portoenterostomy 84 ± 13, p < 0.05). Out of 30 participants assessed, 13(43%) were either at risk or fulfilled the criteria for impaired motor development. Guardians reported elevated rates of functional difficulties affecting everyday life. There were no significant differences between native liver and liver transplanted (16/41%) groups.
